10 questions to a brief
digilee (221 points) | Thu, 2005-08-04 13:13Imagine this situation:
An email comes in from a client asking for you to redesign their site.
To obtain a comprehensive design brief, what are the 10 questions that you would ask the client.
Something along the lines of, (in no particular order):
1, Provide 3 URLS of current sites that you like and comment what you like about them.
2, Provide 3 URLS of current sites that you dislike and comment what you dislike about them.
3, Comment on why you think your site needs a redesign
4, What would you like the redesign to achieve ..
etc ..
What would you put on the list?

Here's a few...
- Could they list the site structure including extra elements they feel are missing from the current site.
- Had they thought about ways the web-site could streamline their working process (shared working space, easy updating, project management etc.)
- Who's responsibility is it to update the website & what expertise is currently available in the company; technically, graphically & for producing copy.
- What expectations do they have for the website it terms of what it can achieve.
- Whats the budget.
- Do they have a specific deadline i.e. an event they are working towards.
- Who are they currently targeting & who would they like to target.

One question I ask all prospective clients is to give me three adjectives that they would like their clients to say when they visit this site. (clean, professional, techie, etc.)
I often ask:
1) "What five adjectives would you want a visitor to your redesigned site to use when describing it? That is, what are five qualities the redesign should embody?"
2) "What five adjectives would you NOT want a visitor to your redesigned site to use when describing it? That is, what are five qualities the redesign should not embody?"
3) "Who are your main competitors? Which qualities of their current web designs should we emulate? Which should we avoid?"
