[3D] Convention
Drugo (99 pencils) | Tue, 2005-09-20 11:38Ok..I don't know if someone here work with 3D apps..this is still a wip...but i'd like to get critique about this image...This is the result of 8 hours of modelling, lighting & material setup and, of course, rendering.
Commenting on this Image is closed.

I'm not a 3D expert by any means and am unsure what you want us to critique but this looks like a well rendered layout for some limd of boxing ring/Gym/lounge maybe a bit too much green at the moment. If it's supposed to be a Heineken event maybe sprinkle some red, white and black around as well?
Love the sofas, did you design them? One would look great in my lounge :)

hi mijle,
you did the right critique...and you're right, there's too much green, i'm chancing the floor from green to midgray...the green component came from ambient light...and yes it's an Heineken event but I can't choose other colors... this is a part of an external project.
You'll find the sofa here

I do a lot of 3D modeling of tradeshows and events. So I have a bit of experience.
Biggest problem:
If this is a Heineken even I would make sure the logo in the back is not stretched in any way (which it is) and it should be lit better. Also, Heineken has other colors (white and red) and I would use them! It is way too green, makes me feel ill.
Other suggestions:
The top of the arena is a big dead hole. I know you don't want to model everything, but I would texture map something up there, or by a ceiling from turbosquid.
The lighting is very boring. Make sure you have an overall light source, but then add some diectional lighting to cast secondary and tertiary shadows. Look how everything has a shadow right underneith it, and they are strong shadows.
If you have the time, add some people. But only if they look 100% real. In fact the best way is to use photography and photoshop them in...it's a lot of work and you have to be concerned about lighting on them, but when done right, it will sell the image 100%.
Also, don't be afraid to make things a little less perfect. Everything is in a grid, some things would be off a bit. Try rotating a couch 1-3%. The key to good 3D is knowing how to make it "unperfect".
Hope that helps, I could send you a few samples if you want.
It's a great start........now go finish it. :)
Hi - I work with 3D apps as well, so I appreciate the work you've put into this. I really like your layout, but I have to agree with some of the posts. The lighting could be more exciting with spotlights (high lights AND low lights for dramatic shadows) in strategic areas - not the least of which on the logo, which is what should be standing out in this image. Overall it is too green - using more white will work well to tone it down a bit. It just feels unnatural with all the green lighting. Another thing that's bothering me is that it just feels too sterile, too boxy. Why are there so little textures, or materials? Maybe if you chose a subtle pattern for the carpeting (a lot of tradeshow venues have patterened carpeting), in different hues or colors for interest. It would certainly ground the eye and take the attention away from the emptiness of the ceiling. Too many boxy shapes as well - although I do love the sofa's (very retro!), the other boxy shapes make them get lost in all the angles.
However, all this being said - I love the bleacher seats, I love the ring, I love the objects. They all work well together. I suppose what's throwing me off is trying to see past the green sea of boxes to get to the what's important - the logo and the center ring. Lighting, patterns, and different shapes will help draw the eye to where you want them to and end with a more powerful effect for your image.
Hope I didn't offend you - I really do like your work, even though it may sound like I'm judging too much - I'm not. I wouldn't give my 2 cents if I didn't feel the work was great already!
Good luck!
I post to get this kind of critique.
This work need is to explain to client (heineken in this case) just the combination of elements in the stage..they don't pay too much attention to lighting and shadows..they just want to know how the conference will be.
@My2c I agree about "perfection" of elements, but, as i told, this is not my project...i'm converting cad files in 3D...and they want/need that..
@ECLombardo No specific texture are required and the style the client requested is "minimal".
anyway..take a look here to another wip
thank you for posting.

I like having them both. While the second is my preference of the two, I might not appreciate what you have done until I saw the second one. It really looks like you put more energy (sorry to come accross as 'new-agey') into the piece.
The only thing I can comment is that the beer branding looks distorted. Otherwise it's great for me. I would never be able to do this.
This is my last render.
As i told you before, they just need to "understand" how the convention will be.
