A Wild Sheep Chase Book Cover
Emack (52 pencils) | Fri, 2008-05-30 00:12This was an idea for the book cover for: "A Wild Sheep Chase". I wanted to touch on the mysterious sheep that the main character is searching for throughout the novel. I used a kind of traditional Japanese style to the illustration, while keeping the composition pretty minimal. This will be the first book of three. I will keep the red sun (japanese flag) constant throughout the series...

And I love Murakami too!
Really nice work. Congratulations.
Baaaaautiful! The only thing that bothers me with this design is the hyphenation use in so few words in the back cover description. But that's just a personal thing--I'm the type of designer who disembowels H&Js...unless within the actual novel itself/heavy copy areas.

This is a fitting cover to one of my favorite books ever, my one of my favorite authors. I'd love to see you do one of Dance, Dance Dance.

I'm going to print it out and eat it.

Thanks! I'm actually working on two more of his books. Kafka on the Shore and Norwegian Wood. Should be posting them pretty soon.
...I wish I could read it again for the first time.
Again, great work.
Never read this person's work, but my interest is piqued. What genre is/are they written?
to assist in tastes--the one that nailed my soul was The 5 People you meet in heaven (pre-movie; and, never watched it; I find movies, in most cases, destroy books).

180 degrees from Album. Though the stories do generally have a very redeeming arc, there are lots of odd turns and dark corners. Lots of Cats and noodles, but then there's Colonel Sanders pimps, Johnny Walker inspired killers, mentally challenged heros... pick one up a the library, give it a try. If you like it, go buy a few more.
I really don't know who to compare him to... If I had to, I'd say he's a mix of Nicholson Baker (easy reading, current, sometimes vulgar) and Anthony Burgess (complex, bizarre) with a hefty dose of asian pop culture thrown in for good measure.
I forgot how much I like him. I wish the bookstore was still open.
Thanks. I'm going to have to give Mr. Murakami a try. Convoluted simplicity sounds like too much fun.
Cheers.

I love the style, the bold use of white space... it's all very beautiful.
I think the only two nitpicks I'd have is the hyphenation (was mentioned previously), and the "A" in the title... I think the balance of the typography of the title is spot on and fantastic, but that darn busy capital A followed by a busy capital W is bothering my eyes.
It's on the cusp of being a design faux pas. One of my biggest pet peeves in typography is to see script text used in all caps, and the A right next to the W is borderline on that for me.
But that's it - I think everything else is fantastically beautiful.
What does the Japanese text in the design say?
Thats a good point. I'll change drop it down to lower-case and fix those nasty hyphens.
If I could read Japanese I could tell you! I'll do a little digging and try and find out. That might need to be relevant...since there are people that CAN read Japanese.
Thanks for the feedback!
Yeah... it would probably not be good if that text said something really offensive, or even really just off-topic in Japanese.
I was thinking you'd found someone who knew how to write Japanese and wrote the title of the story again in Japanese.
Again, just a beautiful design. I love that kind of style. Bold white space use with a bit of grunge and a hand-drawn sort of effect all tied back together with an elegant script font. Shabby sheik. Marvelous. :)
Evan, I was just looking at some of your work on DeviantArt. Very fine stuff. I like your style.
