The Ad Mad redesign
The Ad Mad (24 points) | Tue, 2008-08-19 16:22Hey there!
I just redesigned my blog, The Ad Mad. (click to see it)
I was looking for some critique on it: navigation, header, icons, sponsors ubication, etc. Any comments are welcomed!
Thanks!

What did it look like before? It will be easier to compare this site to the old one if we can see the old one.
Taken by itself, here's my critiques:
1. Background overlaps in FF2 on a PC and is WAY too busy
2. Why is the titl fonts justified? I'd left justify them for good font leading
3. I'm not crazy about the title fonts, looks like formata? I'd go with something more distinctive, but still sans-serif.

Hey thanks for pointing that out, here's a thumbnail of the previous version (it's small and you can't really appreciate details, but it wasn't a full redesign as you can see)

- I think I fixed the loading time taking out some scripts that weren't really useful, but still there's a second where it looks weird, with the background overlaping the content. I optimized everything so I guess it's just the server that is slow :S. Does it load any faster for you now?
- The only thing justified is the posts text. What do you mean by the titles?
- The header type is formata, and I see your point but I think I'll stick to it :)
Any other comments are welcomed!
Thanks

Seems kind of insane to see my point and not change it. Dontcha think? :)
By title I mean the headline text under the main banner: "Unmentionable Monsters by Shinebox". Don't Justify your H1 tags.

It's clean and easy to navigate, from a Mac Firefox point of view. My only qualm with it is your "About" and "Sitemap" links. They're minute and placed right at the very base of the page. I'd move those puppies up near the top...especially the About link--that's an intro to the entire reasoning behind your blog.
Just my 4 cents (due to inflation).

The background still overlaps. You should validate your HTML (http://validator.w3.org/check) and fix the errors. Might fix the background issue. I'm in FF2 on a PC.
Your home page is way too large for Google rankings. It's 251K when it should be 160K or less. Google tends to ignore pages over 160K as a general rule. Do what you can to "lighten the load".

Thanks for your opinion everyone!
3dogmama: you're right, the 'about' page should be on a more visible place, I'll figure out something for that
Natobasso: haha I mean I know what you're saying, formata isn't that personal, but don't necessarily agree on changing the font ;) Maybe tweaking it a bit somehow would do the trick, and I might work on that later.
About loading time, I took the size down to around 150k which seems quite reasonable for a blog with lots of images. I validated the site too. Is it still too slow? It loads fine here.
Thanks again!

I'm still showing your site's home page at 207K. Better, but not super fantastic. Your CSS has 15 errors, some of which you might want to look at; others are the auto attributes you're using to center your layout.
Your background is messed up still. Make your container graphics transparent png or gifs so you don't have to try to line up two different sets of backgrounds together. It looks bad in FF2 on a PC.
Your fonts are too large now, and the icons on the right are jaggy.
Otherwise looking good. Your ranking is better than the company site for whom I'm web designer: http://www.healthlinesystems.com (just got to 989,000!) so good work there.
Make sure to fill in your robots.txt file. Helps google search your pages and you can block other content as well from being searched:

Good job on the sitemap -- I use xml-sitemaps.com too. :)
Seriously consider a different title font. Formata is not a title font, it's a body copy font.
