adapting a logo/brand for the web

Hi

without giving too much away:
I am working on a website design project at the moment. I feel totally clueless and am probably. I don't want to post the logo in the critique forum because of client confidentiality. I didn't design the logo but I need advice on how to adapt/use it for the website.

Would there be an experienced designer on the forum I could show it to privately for some feedback?
Please let me know if anybody would be able to pass on some of your wisdom.
Or if you have an immediate advice regarding the adaptation of logos.

Maybe you can just show a similar logo and explain the problem?

I'd be happy to help - though Ivan's idea above is a good one.

Sounds like what you've been given is not:

1. Vector Art
2. Easily printable in 1 color

In this case, it's best to attempt to vectorize the logo in order to have the best chance of using it in different media.

I have a jpg of a logo that's like it but is not it. I just changed it together in Photoshop. It looks really stupid but it gives the idea of the shape and colour of the logo I am working with. Thanks natobasso for that bit of advice.
Many thanks Alex for your offer to help.

In advance please forgive my ignorance.
This is like the logo.
Now the client wants a website that is modern and clean.
The gold wavy line is not normally a wavy line (that was my idea) but there is always the gold line in some form. On their packaging there is a gold trim to the black labels, the lines are straight. On their old website there was a gold curved line running under their logo and then straight across the top over the menu bar.
Not sure whether to hold onto a wavy line idea at all. What tips could you give me to achieve the modern clean look with the black logo?

Tips:

1. Remove the black background entirely; it's not part of the logo
2. Remove the inner drop shadow on the fish. Very 1997/Kai's Power Tools there. Not good.
3. Remove the wavy line. That, also, is not part of the logo.

As long as you vectorize all the remaining elements, you'll be able to better play with them, move them around, and utilise them in a more modern way. Right now this is more a business card than a logo.

This is a badly altered version of the actual logo. The fish is awful I know but it vaguely represents the fish that is on the actual logo. The black background seems to be a part of the branding of the company. On their food labels and on the aprons of the staff there is always a black background. So that was my first question. How do I keep the black background that is a part of the branding and incorporate it in to a website that is modern and fresh. I'll tell you what I have done and that is have the banner to the website black and the logo in an oval bordered with gold. Do you think this would be a mistake? I know it's hard to imagine with what I have shown here.

Have you been given any kind of style guide for the company? If not don't worry, just put one together for your own use. This should cover the colour palette, typography, sparsity or complexity of layouts and any other decorative or structural elements that they use.

Elements may include wavy lines (like the one in your mock-up) textures, background styles, blocks of colour or a certain photographic style, etc.

Once you have these elements you'll be in a far better position to work out how the site should look than you are just working from the logo alone.

that totally makes sense. no I haven't been given a style guide. will make things way easier.
I was thinking about placing the logo in an oval gold frame at the top left of the black banner of the website. keeping the rest of the website clean and white and modern. (Again I can't post a link because the site thinks it is spam.) I guess I was wondering if that would be just plain wrong?
I have read that many designers don't like to use borders if they can help it, but I was wondering when are there exceptions to the rule and when would you absolutely never add a frame of any kind? apologies in advance for my ignorance.

I just wanted to explain that I did not want to post the clients actual logo so I doctored it quickly and badly so it would not be recognizable but it is similar. The black is not a part of their logo but it seems to be a part of their branding.
Yes, The logo they sent me is in a jpg format.
I want to adapt it for the banner of their website and still maintain a fresh modern look.
thanks for the tip about vectorizing.

You want a critique on a logo you're doing but you won't post the actual logo but something similar. Am I the only one here who sees this as ludicrous?

hi leaky penny, nah I am not "doing" the logo. The logo is already done. I just didn't want to post it here so I posted a mock up instead. OK then I decided that I wanted to post it and when I tried I got a message that said the site though I was spamming. Anyway, ya it is probably ludicrous. I was just a bit nervous about the company coming across a discussion about their logo on a website!!
