I was aiming for the April Fools button but everything checks out. Never saw this one coming....Think Adobe have decided to take on the creative world before Apple swallows more of their marketshare. This can only be a good thing for Dreamweaver's UI ;0

I thought it was a big joke too. That's why macromedia haven't updated any of their apps in a while. They were busy planning a deal to sell.
I wonder what is going to happen with their personnel?

I was shocked when I read it!
That means no competition whatsoever for the publishing king!
What about Dreamweaver? Will they keep it going or get rid of it?

Those are very good questions. We shall know soon enough.
You can include king of the world now with the web locked in too.

WHAT???? NO!!!!!!!!
Hopefully it's goodbye GoLive and ImageReady - Dreamweaver and Fireworks are much better. But hopeully a decent interface for Flash. Interesting to see what happens to Macromedia's database stuff - does ColdFusion sit well with Adobe?
I was concerned about how long it's been since we've seen updates, too .... this is a real shame. I love using Freehand, but for some reason I could never really get into DreamWeaver (I used it for my first pass and the rest tweaking by hand). So long serious competition and an inspiration to really improve your products.
Do regulators watching out for future monopolies care about things like the DTP field? Or are they only concerned with the biggest dogs like Microsoft? (Remember years ago when M$ tried to buy Intuit?) Questions, questions ...
I think this can only mean better times for for Flash and Dreamweaver.
Oh... and by the way... death to Freehand.

I don't think Adobe could bury Dreamweaver. If there is an industry standard website program, it's Dreamweaver. I'm most jazzed about full Illustrator to Flash integration. I've never liked using freehand, so this is a godsend.

Oh men! the only industry standard website program is the Notepad! I never liked Dreamweaver, instead of generate html code, it's like it generates dreamweaver own code.

Let's call it FreeShop and release all the software for the public domain! :D
Adobe Creative Suite 3 - twice the programs, twice the price, twice the hassle registering... and half the productivity, due to confusion. ;-)

"Wouldn't that be killer???"
Hells No!
Less competition drives up prices. The fact that adobe will now be almost the only pro graphics app vendor frightens me. What will stop Adobe from charging WAY more than they previously have? I can take $900 or so every couple of years but now with a virtual monopoly on graphics apps there is no reason that Adobe couldn't get away with charging two or three times that much. Adobe is looking like Microsoft more and more every day.

Keep this in mind:
When Adobe purchased Aldus many years ago, they were forced to give up Freehand because they already had Illustrator - this is how Macromedia was born.
So it is highly likely that Freehand will be sold off again, since it has virtually no marketshare at all. It also means that either Dreamweaver or GoLive will also be sold off, but not as much a certainty as Freehand because there is plenty of competition for web builders out there. I suppose it's possible that they merge the two together much the same way that Extensis is merging Suitcase and FontReserve together.
Personally, I was highly upset when Adobe dumped support for LiveMotion years ago, it was far superior to MM Flash for producing Flash-based artwork – So hopefully Adobe will put a better GUI onto Flash and make it a useable program again.

Live Motion, if it was better, would have had longer staying power.
Hopefully, Adobe can keep most all of the workers at MM employed... I hate to see a massive layoff.

I hope Macromedia apps will get their crap together, MX and MX2K were simply horrid. Under Adobes leadership. If they kill DW though...that would be sad, its still better than GoLive.
Couldn't agree more. Adobe is the BMW of user interfaces and user experience, application performance- Macromedia and their entire lineup is like jumping into a stolen Ford Focus.
i hate that program

Nothing better happen to Freehand! Freehand is WAY more intuitive and fits into my daily workflow way better than Illustrator. Until Illustrator gets multiple page support there is no way I can do my job with it.
Make Freehand open source!!!!!!!!

Odds are, Quark will just die a slow agonizing death at the hands of InDesign. No need to buy them, I would think.
In my mind, Quark was dead long ago. It just can't keep up with the powerhouse that is Adobe.
Wishing I had 3.4 Billion.
If Adobe keeps buying stuff, we'll need 3.4 billion just to buy the creative suite. I hope they keep Dreamweaver.. I'm very fond of it. I could do without FreeHand and Fireworks... neither of them ever seemed very good to me. I wonder what'll happen to ColdFusion.
Just a point of interest Coded, how did you put that audioscrobbler link on your post?

Great little plugin! I wish I could change the BG image though...
I hear they're going to combine Freehand and Illustrator, and call it "Frustrator" :)
In all seriousness I think it's a given that Freehand will be the one to be dropped, the big question will be... will anyone notice?
I'm a little concerned about the future of Dreamweaver and GoLive. Although I will agree that Dreamweaver is much more of an industry standard, GoLive is actually a far superior product, from a designer's point of view that is. I say this from an ease-of-use standpoint. Many of DW best attributes are a little more "back-end". The one thing that surprises me to this day is that DW doesn't even know what a QuickTime movie is. Whereas GoLive is very friendly towards QuickTime. This kind of thing is why I say GoLive is better. Hopefully they will take the best of both and make a new app called DreamLive. (BTW, I use Dreamweaver).
As a CD developer, I'm also very concerned about the future of Director. Director is one of the main apps I use. I'm crossing my fingers and hoping it only gets better.
I too am a little worried about the lack of competition in the media-related software biz. I'm just glad it wasn't Microsoft who bought Macromedia. We would be in real trouble :)

I think a merge of Director and Premiere is highly unlikely. Director is an authoring software for the production of CD-ROM based apps and simple games whereas Premiere is a programm for video cutting.
I certainly hope Adobe takes the best parts from Freehand. I find it much easier to use for quick layouts than Illustrator or any other app.
Time to register DreamLive.com and such names. ;)
bet you they've already bought everything they need... :)
I agree. FreeHand's a lot more intuitive than Illustrator. Although I've never understood what the big deal is with multiple pages: I always have to split it into separate documents anyway to import it as EPS.
Actually I think all of Adobe's suite apps suffered a little when they tried to make the interface more consistent. Uh, I use many different programs every day, Adobe -- I can keep them straight, thanks.
What does everyone think about this possibly setting up actually Industry Standards for programs used? seeing as there won't be any real competition.
I guess we won't have much choice. :)
Thanks God it's not MS we're talking about here. Imagine if MS would've bought up both Adobe and Macromedia. It still can happen, but then I'll change my career. :)
and learn how to sort glass with my tongue if MicroSoft did that

My worries are for the future of Dreamweaver and the employees of Macromedia.
*sigh*
Guys,
This is huge, I mirror the concerns for MM's employees, and adobe's prices. Not to mention the ease of pirating MM's products will soon be gone..
Im with cbrophy8@creati... not too sure about cutting off hands - but along those lines! I hope they keep Dreamweaver and ditch GoLive. Ditch Freehand... never really got into that, but why would you when theres AI? It is worrying that as said, there is no competition now, so lets hope they dont sit back and relax, we need them to keep pushing forward - as we do.
FREHAND MX = Illustrator + InDesign + more...
Hope the merge the three in to the most powerful weapon for Graphics/Print.

Macworld in the US is reviewing the Adobe Creative CS 2 package and their turn has come to the Golive CS 2 application and they smash it to pieces..
They appearantly gave it 2/5 in grade..
I generally hope that Adobe throws Golive away and keep Dreamweaver!
