Advertising Costs
Mintsauce (1004 pencils) | Wed, 2007-08-22 12:57I have this client, well I have more than one, but this specific one needs me to do something, which I can't do, yet. Well, actually, I'm just completely ignorant in this matter. I'm hoping that someone here will be able to point me in the right direction.
My client is publishing a diary, which I am doing the layout and design for. The client, let's call him Mr-K, has found a large company to sponsor the printing and distribution of the Diary (day planner, not journal). Mr-K now needs to work out the budget for the publication.
The following needs to be considered:
· Design/Layout Cost (Obvious, I better get paid for this.)
· Printing Cost
· The Publisher's Fee
Advertising Considerations:
· This "planner" will be distributed to a targeted audience of 20 000 people
· Planner will be in audience hands for duration of 2008
· Production Cost of Publication $10 (incl design, print)
The Sponsor wants the following:
· Title will be (pseudonym) "Publisher's Name Dieter's Planner 2008 by Sponsor's Name"
My Question:
· How do we calculate the cost of ads for this publication?
· Do we charge the Sponsor for ads, or should they get ads for free?
Any other suggestions are WELCOME!!!!

It appears you're production costs will be roughly $200,000... does that include distribution?
Normally you calculate ad costs by working backwards from the profit goals for the project. We have a good ballpark on the overall costs but need some additional key information to complete the math...
- Total # of Editorial Pages
- Projected # of Ad Pages
- List of Ad Sizes being Sold (Full, 1/2, 1/4, etc)
- Are you selling premium cover positions? (IFC, IBC, Back Cover)
- Do you have a 'profit' goal?
- Do much is the sponsor kicking in?
Depending on the contribution sponsorship normally includes a set number of ad postions at no charge.
