Align and Distribute Vertical Objects Evenly Around a Circle
grafxlounge (5 pencils) | Wed, 2008-07-09 00:47I want to create a "speedometer" vector image in Illustrator. How do I align the vertical hash lines (which are of 2 different lenghts) in a circular shape so they are distributed evenly? I use Adobe CS3 for Windows XP.

I guess I need a picture of what you're talking about. I'm envisioning a circle in the middle with a bunch of lines going out like tire spokes?
If so... (maybe some one has an easier solution) I'd make the circle. Then make a vertical line going from top to bottom (going through the circle in the middle with the middle point being at the center of the circle). A horizontal line going left to right (again with the center point at the center of the circle). Then, copy pasting and rotating at 45°, -45°, and so on until you get how many you want. After this, you can scale the ones you want smaller down. Just scale from the center axis using your transform palette.
This and a little bit of trial and error will get you the result you need.
If you know how many hash marks you want, this will help you calculate how many steps and repeats you need to do.

I used a circle as a text path and did two different point sizes of the vertical mark (usually the upper case of the backslash on your keyboard) and just copy/pasted them, then tracked until I had the look I wanted. But using the rotate tool as Pokie suggests would give you more control over stroke width, etc.
