Amazing designer website
natobasso (3953 pencils) | Wed, 2007-08-29 19:41I don't normally go ga ga for a designer's website, but this person did a great job and I have to put a link up here:

I'm impressed with all the CSS and web programming, not to mention the person's clean clean design style.

It's not the best design in the world, but it's clean and presentable. This, to me, is one of those cases where the guy has obvious talent on the backend and should leave the design work to the pros. Either that, or find a better design school. He's too focused on bells and whistles instead of pure design.
As a side note, the guy lost all credibility with me when he misspelled a client's name (a very big client) - which leads me to believe that he's completely full of shit.

bells and whistles don't work when the designer uses them without knowing what he is doing. to my eyes, this person knows exactly what he(or she) is doing. it's a beautiful design that gets it's job done very well, promoting the designer.
Hi, I am karim Boukarabila. thank you natobasso for your post. Of course I am open to any comments, bad or pleasant. But I do not understand why JimD said I lost my credibility by misspelling a client's name (which client ?). But more interesting, what do you mean about "pure design". Could you precise us what is good and bad design according to you ? No one have the monopoly of taste. I always strive to be both universal and orignal and the good balance is a thin thin line. Please try to write something a little bit more constructive. Thanks

Not sure why folks aren't digging the design, but I think coupled with the css and html programming it's a compelling site.
By the way, how did you find this post? :)

It's solid, but I would add something to focus on. There are so many elements on the page, I don't know where to look.
I guess i sort of like the fancy effects, but even then, they aren't anything fantastic.
overall though, i don't think it's such a well designed website.
i agree with ivan, there is nothing to focus on, my eye is drawn all over the place, and my immediate reaction is, because of that, that it's going to be difficult to find what i want. i don't want to keep using it.
the "folio" section of each discipline seems to be slash-dapped onto the page in just a 2-column fashion. the reflections are VERY distracting, and there doesn't seem to be any uniformity in the size of the images.
it's not a bad website, i just don't think it's as wonderful as the OP suggests.

Ok, it is not a good website even if 90% of my clients think the opposite as well as those who vote for my website and of course the designers staffs who awarded it. Sorry if I am using trendy aqua and mirror FX… next time I will "skin" it as google. One more thing, show us what you can do.

ok first of all, if you're going to get that defensive, i'd recommend getting out of this business altogether. If you can't take a critique without getting defenseive, i won't even bother coming back to this thread.
second, this has nothing to do with my abilities. i've posted some of my work here a few times, looking for an objective opinion on it. We are talking about a website here that was touted as an "amazing designer website" which happens to be your work. it's not a personal attack on you, and it certainly has nothing to do with seeing me do better.
Third, I never said it wasn't a good website, I said that overall, I don't think it's that well designed - I don't think it's amazing. Just because 90% of your clients think it's wonderful does not mean it's perfect. Again: I don't think it's a bad website, I just don't think it's amazing.
Seriously though, if you're going to get ridiculously defensiveto the point of flippancy, I'm not going to bother replying, and I'd suggest you ask the OP to remove the post so no one else hurts your feelings.

While I agree with your overall sentiment, looking back at the replies to this post, very little of the criticism offered is actually constructive. Just a thought.

i dont think mine was unconstructive.
it wasn't a full analysis of the site, it was a quick impression of certain points that stood out to me.

If the title I gave this post set the site up for this much criticism, I definitely do regret the error!
Just seemed to me the site was well done. I program and design websites and it is W3C compliant and is designed well. It's RARE to get both in the same place.

The site hierarchy is simple and self-evident (rare on most other websites!) and I believe there is something to focus on: The main logo top right.

After doing a quick Yahoo and Google search for web designers, this site is certainly better than most. However, I'm currently designing my site (just went freelance) and will be very cautious of NOT emulating the Apple School Of Design (gradients, mirroring, and glossy-reflective hooha)...it's becoming a cookie cutter world of sites out there...all looking the same...it is getting a bit predictable.
my 2 cents,
ed havel
So, even though I appear quite late on this thread, I thought I would add my input.
My initial thought on the design was that it loaded quite slowly for me. I'm on a very high connection and it still took a while for the rollovers to load. After it completely loaded, my thought was "Oh, another reflection site." Sure, it looks cool - that's why apple did it, and that's why a LOT of designers do it. But, I'm sorry to say - it's quite old. Now, with that being said, I don't think it's a bad design overall. I'm sure the majority of clients would think it was snazzy - but experienced designers know that these effects are quite . . .overused.
After looking through the site a little more, I found that the portfolio text was so small I could hardly read it, and I had to do the 'ol CMD+ so I could read it. I'm not a fan of text on black, so it kind of annoyed me there.
The idea of having both a "about me" and a "profile" section confuses me. When I clicked the "about me" I expected to see your profile.
My last thought on the site is that it's nice, you clearly have some coding skills, but it seems like maybe you wanted to use all the tricks in bag. It seems a little to busy, and there is a LOT of information on your site. I didn't read through it all, mostly because I don't have the patience. You might want to consider simplifying - and enlarging your text so that older people can read it.
I hope that was constructive. I don't think your site is as bad as it's made out to be here.

I agree with some points developped by Seraphim. Everything is perfectible and unfortunately everything on the internet is quickly become old. You forgot 2 things : the site is dedicated to customers not to the designers (except for suckers) and the real goal is to present the design work.
