And now for something completely different
mara06 (2742 pencils) | Mon, 2012-05-14 15:08We've been hit with an awful lot of spam lately, so I thought I'd get us back on track with an actual critique, as opposed to catalog photos and blank gray spots. :/
This was for a half-page ad in a high-end magazine. I had no choice about the photo, though I did modify it here and there to correct some lens distortion and to remove a few overly distracting elements.
The framework for this ad has become the client's template for future ads, both vertical- and horizontal-reading, with changes in color and text placement to suit whatever photo the client wants to use. This helps to correct a problem I thought they had with too many different styles, missing out on branding themselves, because they previously used the services of different magazines' art departments for their layouts.
Let 'er rip!

First I repair is this red frame, I feel some bloody strain
yes I'm brazilian xD
Would you feel the same way if it were solid instead of screened? Or would it have to be a totally different color? Hey wait, let me try my new SayHi Translator:
Vôce gostaria que a cor vermelha para ser uma cor diferente ou apenas mais sólida?

Thanks Mara! I know color is personal but I think too much room for red creates a huge tension that could be avoid with so sweet mountain home. I think white frame brings some peaceful feeling and combine better wih wood as this kitchen furnishings.

I'm only getting the preview size - no actual size version. Don't know if that makes a difference when if comes to the critique, but...
Legibility is a little dicey with the plaid chairs and rafters in the background. I would like to see a slightly larger head, slightly smaller sub and the bullets moved down into an enlarged red section under the logo. But that might be jmho...
Hmm. I see the text size position issue. If I had it to do over again, I'd move the last line down a bit too. Ya think?

I'd extend the list of services by one word/ service to make it longer and less tall so that their picture is more prevelant. I don't know what I'd do to fix the top but the margin spacing feels uncomfortable to me :(
You're right. It all looks too bunched toward the middle. I guess I felt I had to let as much of the chairs show as possible, because the client wanted to highlight them. My bad! Would you have made the margins (by which I guess you mean the screened red and beige) a little wider, shrinking the photo proportionally? I'd like to nudge the top two lines down. Funny how you see stuff long after the fact that you don't see on deadline! I really appreciate your observations.

It's more to do with your title text for me, it's really close to the top and the next line under the title seems really far down hanging in limbo.
That Bottom Content Looks Odd......
Can you be more specific? This doesn't tell me anything.
