And the ads begin on CB

JimD's picture

I was afraid this was going to happen. Only days after Ivan announces the sale of CB to Jupiter Media, an animated ad pops up in the sidebar. OK, I can live with a butt-ugly blinking, scrolling, flashing ad... after all, it's small.

Today I check in, and guess what I see. A GIANT FRRRREEEEAAKIN AD across the top of the page that doesn't even fit in the site layout. Ugh!

These companies just don't get it. To them it's just all about the ad dollar. I'm sure they don't intentionally do this, but the lack of attention is disturbing to say the least.

Adblock plus

if you're using firefox, i stongly recommend that you get your hands on the adblock plus extension, it's fantastic. as the name suggests it blocks ads and does it really well, on a number of occasions i have been perplexed as to how a certain site makes money and then i remember all those ghastly ads that i'm not seeing.

i also recommend getting the filterset g extension for adblock plus, its just some filter rules that are already defined so you don't have to do it. the odd time adblock plus will block a bit of flash content you want to see but it's very simple to unblock that content. between the two extensions they make for a much more pleasant web experience.

I have them

I have all the ad-blockers I need in Firefox, the problem is that I don't want to block ads on sites that I enjoy reading. I DO click on the ads on CreativeBits... or at least I used to.

Then you can turn adblockers

Then you can turn adblockers off for creativebits.org, or any other site for that matter, that you want to see ads for.

Take this as a sign that creativebits now has a higher profile. Along with success comes an equal amount of b.s. ;)

ah..

I'm getting my money's worth so I can't complain. But yeah, I saw the same ad this morning. So much for being aesthetically pleasing. ;)

sorry ivan but i used to

sorry ivan but i used to have respect for cb. obviously you saw the dollars and cashed in, i don't blame you, but creative control should have been included in your contract.

Seems to me that having to

Seems to me that having to circumnavigate the occasional ad is a small price to pay, especially when you consider the hefty price Ivan probably has to pay to give us this site. After downloading the Firefox ad-ons described above, I haven't been bothered by ads on cb or anywhere else. Maybe folks using other browsers could find something that does the same thing for them. (Just don't tell Ivan's advertisers, or they might reconsider their investment!)

Fixed now

I would like to say that I've known Ivan for a few years now, and I have a great amount of respect for him and his work.

These "advertising issues" are not due to his lack of attention, "selling out" or anything else. When a company purchases your site, they have full control. Period. Regardless of "creative control," they are going to put ads on the site to recoup their costs. Had this been Ivan's site, I'm confident that the ads would have been placed with more quality control. But it's probably just not his call.

Besides, it's fixed now.

People, when a site gets

People, when a site gets more popular it becomes a source of revenue. The largest source so far are ads (anyone seen Google's stock price lately?!). Get over it. Enjoy cb's success. Turn off the ads if you have to in order to enjoy the site.

Move on. ;)

As long as it is in good taste...

Honestly I agree that we all do work for the might ad dollar, and I am sure that this decision was not easy for Ivan... As long as ads aren't over done (or not sized to flow with the overall design), personally they don't bother me, especially if it's relative content. Cheers to your success...
