Angry and nice

Ivan's picture

angry and nice face

Look at the image above. On the left you see an angry man. On the right a nice woman. Now stand up from you chair and take several steps back. The nice woman is now on the left and the angry man is on the right. Can you tell me how this is done?

You may also want to check out the amazingly dissapearing purple dot and Boring's beautiful illustration.

Whoa thats trippy stuff

I saw some photoshop trick once, there was two images inside one. I think one was of a babe and the other was yellow tulips. When you increased the contrast and brightness, one image disappeared and the other appeared. Im wondering if this is similar. There is a hidden image in the blurring that can only be seen when blurred and one that can only be seen in focus ( take the image into photoshop and gaussian blur it by "2" and you'll see an angry bloke on the right and and angry woman on the left )

So playing on the eyes focus, the overlaying image being shifted a few pixels to the left (right image) or to the right (left image).

Very cool stuff, i would love to know if theres a billboard advert that has taken use of this effect... shows one thing far away but as you get closer it shows something else completely... that could be very different ;)

That is exactly what I

That is exactly what I though of. How can I use this effect for an ad. Have you seen the Clearasil ad that takes a well known optical illusion as it's main concept?

Jammo's picture

oooh nice ad

Thats funny :D

Pretty cool that.

It could be used to get the message across not to drink too much over the christmas season. Before and after of someone who looks hot under the influence, and then how they really look the next day. Good message for safe sex too. Can this be done to type so headlines can change as well?

Jammo's picture

will only work on small items

I can imagine that this will only work on smaller, less noticeable features... so text could be tricky.

Drink Driving could be a good one for this... never know what it is till its too late

Took more than a few steps

I had to move as far across the room as I could before it worked... but that's pretty trippy.

explanation

as you step further away, the image gets blurred. you can replicate this effect if you reduce the image size in an image editor. so the blurring effect reduces the high frequency (sharpened image features) image information that gives the angry features on the left, and the calm features on the right.

The lower frequency (blurred image features) are perceived by the mind as another image.

for the short-sighted (myopic) ones like me, you can view the effect by just removing your glasses and/or lenses

here is a good link about this illusion.

I managed to re-create it...

Basically... the less detail there is, the more our eyes' rods depend on shadow shapes. The more detail, the less they depend on shadow shapes.

I managed to recreate the effect, though not as nicely as the original...
VOILA!

I wouldn't suggest using this as the primary element of an ad or anything, however the knowledge gained from this illusion should help in other ways.

wow

Amazing... can you describe in a few words what you did?

Nice illusion, quick build steps in PS...

Ok, so you do need two visually similar images... the two faces work so well due to their strong opposing emotions in each and our brains extensive hardwiring for faces. In PS you can reproduce the effect quickly:

1) Place in your two image originals*, a layer for each
2) Gaussian blur one of them at, say, ~5 px
3) High Pass filter the other at ~5 px
4) Set the top layer's opacity 50%
5) Tweak as needed (I de-saturated both, and auto-contrasted the high pass)

* The trick is choosing 2 images, visually similar enough, but with a strong variation in meaning (emotional variation seems a good choice).

Obviously the blur and high pass filter scales all depend on things like image dimensions, final viewing size, expected distance of viewer etc. I have some more examples if anyone wants a look (email me).
