Another logo
eZoeGraffix (103 pencils) | Wed, 2009-10-21 04:19This is for an online company that sells flashlights from China. The background is merely for presentation, demonstrating that the logo works on both light and dark backgrounds without needing alteration.
Edit note: Buffed up the arms a bit.

Lose the details, play with negative space (see Scarface movie poster) And find a more creative way to show a dragon illuminating something.
If you have to pick one coloured background, this ain't gonna work on black. Also, the best way to show how well something works on a dark/light background is to put it on a dark/light background, not half and half.
P.S. Also research some dragons, cause those are some of the stringiest looking arms I've ever seen. I'f you're gonna do something, do it right.
P.S.S. I was taught in animation class back in the day to never show something face on or completely to the side. It's flat and boring.

Originally I had an armless dragon holding the flashlight with its tail, as ordered by the client. The client has been dictating new stuff daily and this has been made to his orders.....lol
He wants to have this etched on flashlights, and I was trying to keep the details simple, but I can't seem to impress that upon him. He's wanting a tribal tattoo-looking dragon, holding a flashlight that resembles a certain model, that will be etched into flashlights, but he wants more detail than it really NEEDS, and I'd hate to be the guy who does the etching.
He's sort of a pain in the butt.
I would love to see a small dragon wrapped entirely around a larger flashlight. Then if he's going to actually manufacture them with the etching - he could have the dragon etched around the entire flashlight. The dragon itself would be the tactile relief that makes the flashlight grip. Know what I'm saying? Then you could have more scales and detail, etc because it would make the flashlight itself easier to grip. That would make for one kickass flashlight. Don't you think? The eye would be the "on" switch.
It would be cool, but he's talking about cheap little chinese flashlights, and he appears to have a 'vision'...lol
Once again, I'm glad I'm not the guy doing the etching. :D
it looks like he is playing the flashlight like a guitar, I would use the image of the torch as the body of the dragon and go from there, simplify the head and tail, as with everyone else keep it simple,
You also need to think what the flash lights are made of, if aluminium then your design will become silver, you need to lose the infill as i expect your client is not going to pay the engraver to paint the returns, keep to simple outlines.

Like everyone said, a little too detailed. Cool illustration.
Is there any way you can do something with just part of the dragon to suggest the dragon (I'm assuming that's the company name?) Like just using the head or the wings?
if it's going to be etched on the flashlight, THOROUGHLY research etchings from the likes of Jacques Callot, William Blake and Rembradnt amongst others.

People - we can't be talking about hand etching here if the dude is buying cheap Chinese flashlights! The etching has to be part of the manufacturing - not afterwards. The mold that makes the flashlight will have to be etched. Ergo - he should go with my idea. :-)
Frankly, I think the guy should have gone with my original, SIMPLER drawing, but he's not being very realistic.
I cant' see this as logo because you need to show me the logotype.
It's a illustration for me that could be a tatoo. :]
yes I'm brazilian xD
If the client is looking for something more tribal, I would suggest breaking up the shape of the dragon. When I think of tribal designs, I'm thinking of an abstract image that is broken up into simple shapes

This one actually began very tribal. With all the alterations, it's becoming more of a caricature.
Just looking at this version now, with your background information on the logo. I think it makes sense to style the dragon like a Chinese dragon:

That second one is fierce man. I'm going to have to deign my next tattoo and integrate that into it.
