Another OS X virus bounty
Ivan | Sat, 2005-10-01 08:22I understand where the guy is coming from, but for God's sake why do such a bounty? It won't prove anything, it will only inspire some people to make an effort. Please tell him not to do this challenge.
His heart's in the right place and it's the sort of thing that's a dealbreaker - either someone shows that they were infected by a virus [as per the definition] or they don't.
Since he mentions specific things to comply with, he's not asking anyone to write a virus.
It will be interesting to see the outcome of this..
..And maybe end the whole 'os x has viruses - it's not secure' debate.
I find it interesting, tho not a surprise, who is pushing the whole 'os x gets viruses, to' issue - namely companies who'd benefit.

If nobody wins the 500 usd because there is no virus it doesn't prove anything. There could be a virus, but nobody claimed the prize. Besides even if it did prove that there are no viruses, still it would only mean that until that very moment there are no viruses, but in the future there could be.
Nothing is 100% safe. Of course there is a major difference in history of Windows and OS X. Hunderds of thousands of viruses vs zero so far, but that could change in the future.
Don't do any competitions about it. Just enjoy your secure system and don't try to prove anything. Who cares about the journalists who still say that OS X is MOSTLY virus free? Let them be wrong and loud about it.
