Another person needing Illustrator help

Hello all, I need help coloring cartoons using illustrator. I usually just do vector art, so I don't really deal much with strokes and things associated with cartooning. I can do sketches pretty well, but I can't seem to be able to trace and color them properly in illustrator. My desired effect is something like this:

I don't think I will need to ink much, I just need to know more about how to color and coordinate the layers properly. Any tuts or suggestions?

That looks like more of a problem of patience than technical difficulty...that is if you understand shading on a real drawing basis. If not then I'd learn how to color and shade with real mediums first.
