Anyone here worked as a colourist?
plugz (1244 pencils) | Fri, 2007-05-25 18:58I've been offered a job as a colourist for comics by a friend, it's unpaid as it's a new business and they're short on cash but I'm strangely compelled to take him up on it as it's one thing I've never done and never thought of doing.
My first thought was it'd be too easy and boring but when you think about the fact you have to deal with all manner of shading and gradients for skin tones, shadows, light effects etc. I think it might be a good opportunity to give myself a crash course in colour, no matter how good I think I am I know I have a lot to learn and this looks interesting.
So, anyone got any experience, tips or horror stories?

I was given a rare opportunity to learn inking from an established Marvel artist (unpaid), and took him up on the offer for similar reasons you mentioned.
The experience was great, but due to relocation, we never really developed a working relationship, but I kept inking for fun.
That led to my involvement in a couple of upstart comics (as an inker). Both of which started out very optimistically and fizzled due to one reason or another.
All to say, regardless of what it is, if you want to be good at it, you have to be doing it and you have to dig doing it.
Hope this helps. :)

That helps a lot actually!
Thanks for replying, i got the offer on Thursday and it wasn't until this afternoon I actually realised how useful it could be.
It's doubly important at the moment as I'm hoping to go fully freelance by the end of the year and would much rather be jack of all trades than stuck in my comfort zone and unable to break out due to lack of experience.
I'll see what comes of this over the next few weeks.
