Anyone know alternative for Pantone colour swatch files?
susaki (6 pencils) | Tue, 2006-03-21 00:04I'm looking for an alternative to the Pantone for Fashion and Home Cotton colour swatch files.
As they are around US$3500 it's pretty expensive!
Need around the same amount of swatches as the Pantone files (1900) so if anyone could suggest anything it would be greatly appreciated.
Had a look on the net but no luck as yet.
Thanks

I was complaining about the cost of Pantone books to my print rep, asking why they were so expensive. He asked me, "How much would you charge to lay out about a thousand spot color swatches, not to mention have them printed, die-cut, collated and bound?"
My reply: "Good point."
Doesn't really answer your question, but yeah... I feel your pain. A necessary expense in our line of work, I'm afraid.
Actually, my print rep "acquired" mine a couple of years ago from his contact at his paper supplier and gave it to me.

Plus, he could've said: "How much would you charge if you had a de facto standard in your hands, a product that virtually has no competition and professionals can't live without?" The answer is simple - As much as I can! I do think that the Pantone charts are way overpriced, but as you said we have to have them.
I'm sure the printing alone is expensive. They have to monitor every single color and make sure it's within spec. It's quite a business they have there. :)
But you can use them for a few years if you keep them in good condition.
Thanks guys, I didn't think there would be an alternative anything like Pantone, but it was worth a try!
I have the AI swatches files then I can share, but i don't know if it's legal do this.
What do you think?
