Anyone know InDesign?
Babynoff (65 points) | Fri, 2006-02-17 08:51I am currently working on a large document for print and I am using InDesign. The project is about 120 pages long.
How is the best way to go about this?
I have created the start (10 pages or so) and I know that when it gets to 120 it will be harder to edit single parts. I have tried the book option but I am unable to export the book as pdf (dont know why)
Any suggestions?

120 pages are OK on InDesign as a standard project. You can always use the text editor.
i would highly suggest that you set up your document with use of master pages and paragraph and character style sheets. this will make the whole process much easier. you can create the entire book under document not book.
ive found book to be helpful when there is a good reason for me to do the different sections of the books as seperate documents. i create those documents first then start a book. i import those documents in the book, which will allow you to share all style sheets and carry page numbering thru the seperate documents.
hope this was helpful. think of the book option in indesign as a compiler of documents.
thanks for the comment.
I started my 'book' by making 3 master pages as i will have 3 different types of page. as you pointed out, the use of styles makes life so much easier.
i was thinking of using the book method because the catalogue i am making has 20 different sections, as well as front/rear covers and inside covers, and also the usual stuff, index, contents etc.
would it be just as easy to do this using one document or to create a document for each section and compile using 'book'?

well the pluses to compiling them in a book as different documents is that you can easily re order the different sections. you can work on one section at a time. you can also have different master pages for each document if the need is there.
i find it useful in organization. also i like keeping them seperate if parts of the book are to be black n white and parts color. i can always preflight, package, or pdf the appropriate sections seperately for the printer.
i see what you mean. can you export the entire book as pdf? i tried to export a book earlier and it looked as though it was doing it then nothing happened. reason is the catalogue will be attached to a web site and made on cd

yes you can export your book as a pdf. just choose export book to pdf from the book pallette menu. you must have documents in the book for it to export anything.
If you are having trouble exporting to pdf have you tried printing as a postscript file then running the ps file through distiller. This has help me before in the past

Cheers for all the comments guys
When I was using the book method i did have trouble exporting as .pdf. However that could have been because the files were not completed. I am working on finishing the project and i will try export it when its finished, see if it works then.
I am not entirely sure what disiller is, or whether i have it so i will look it up, cheers.

Distiller comes with the Adobe Creative Suit (Premium Edition at least) as part of Acrobat Pro.
that could be the problem...i have standard edition! unfortunately i dont get acrobat pro either. :(

In the book palette, make sure none of the files are selected. Click on the round circle with the triangle in it, and click "Export book to pdf...". You don't need Distiller or anyhting. It doesn't get any easier than that.
You can also print the entire book with this method.
