Are Macromedia products slower on a Mac?
rampy (61 points) | Wed, 2005-06-22 13:53Hi Guys, I have a question for those of you who use Dreamweaver and Flash on a Apple Mac.
I am looking to replace my old Wintel box system (and mostly old software) sometime next year (after Macworld Expo 2006 probably), yes, I want to move to the Macintosh as my main work station.
I have heard that Macromedia Flash and Dreamweaver are terribly slow on Macs, if you use Dreamweaver or Flash MX 2004 on a Mac (G4 - G5), can you tell me if that is true?
Of all my switching worries, that one seems impossible to work around (if its true).
Thanks!

"Terribly slow" may be stretching it a bit. They are slow compared to other applications. And to be quite honest, Macromedia's apps have been somewhat buggy the last few releases, and appear to have gotten slower with each update – but they're quite useable, especially on newer Macs.
FYI, Adobe is in the process of purchasing Macromedia and all its software applications. The widely believed rumor is that Adobe will stop development on their own GoLive and ImageReady apps and use Dreamweaver & Fireworks instead. No matter what happens, you can be sure that Adobe will be "fiddling" with the apps, and that could change everything.

..that the embedded flash player in safari/firefox is somewhat slower on Mac but Dreamweaver and Flash MX 2004 run perfect on OSX with everything from a 700mhz G4 up to a dual 2.5mhz G5. I don't have anything slower than the 700mhz G4 so that's about all I can tell you.
The stand alone flash player for testing etc. runs just fine as well.

Hey thanks guys, that more or less put my worries to rest. I'm using PIII 667 with 512RAM, I guess a 2 Ghz iMac will be faster anyway you look at it than what I have now. Looking forward to getting the iMac and OS X!
I find I really don't like the flash version that is available for Mac, but I would say it's the only program I can think of that I prefer the PC version of.
