ASLs choice

Hi everyone,

We've recently been rebranding ASL (i posted a single design before). They work on systems which control all aspects of large buildings (CCTV, Public Address Systems, Voice Alarms, etc). See their old brand - http://www.asl-electronics.co.uk/

We developed two logos to choose from. What we'd really like your help on is which one you'd choose and why?

Many thanks.

Chris

Logo one. Why? Because its positive and negative spaces appear more balanced. It's clean, cut and uncluttered. Its business acumen is amplified in these well-honed and styled lines, yet the mark also lends itself to an informal warmth with the gentle serif coming off of its "A".

The three letters in logo one also mesh better together, whereas in logo two the letters appear unto themselves, each one their own design.

not the second one. I like the first one.

The second logo has no strength. I'm another one who hears an echo of some other familiar icon in it.

Though I'm not wild about the first one, it's light-years better than their current one, and does have the strength this company's services call for.

the whole "leaf" or tear drop thing has been way over done, and the one place i've seen it well used is the rebranding for the Bahamas

as for the comments of the background, that looks like a rather easy one to make with a circular pattern and some lighting effects. it is nice though!

A couple things.

1. Ditch the background and do your logos in black and white. Shrink them down. See if they work in all media. The first logo will join the smaller it gets, blurring the definition of the letter forms.

2. I'm never enamored of logos that simply use the company's initials as the icon. It's just not that creative. Imagine if Apple Computer, Inc. (yes, now just Apple but bear with me here) used ACI for it's initials? Boring. Try to create an icon and a logotype separately. Then put them together for your brand.

Exceptions to #2 are Coca Cola, IBM, Pepsi, brands that have spent thousands of hours on their logotypes to the point that they actually become icons. The logos you've shown here don't seem to fit into this exception.

And yes, that Q in logo 2 has been WAY done to death, to the extent that Quark had to change it realizing that they were infringing on the Scottish logo's copyright.

ASL is such a funny acronym to be playing around with. anytime i hear it or see it i think... "ASL?!?!?!?" "A/S/L?!?!?" "15/CA/PIC?""

in the first logo the "A" reminds me a bit of the lambda or half life logo. its just the dork in me and not something to worry about.

Natobasso said it all in his last post. +1.

the second one is just remembering me about Etisalat here in UAE.
