Aspen Logo Set
spigot (190 points) | Tue, 2009-11-10 18:59This is the initial set mocked up after sketches. There are essentially three concepts here, with #1 and #3 being a similar, whimsical style, #2 being a more tried and true 'straight-man' style, and #4 - as it is what it is. I'm not fond at all of #4 but the client insisted something along these lines get mocked up.
I've been designing in a box as of late, and feeling like my design eye has gone askew. I could really use a good critique.
Don't be shy, hit it hard.
UPDATE: Ok, so I agree with everyone that there aren't any really strong concepts here... Since the client chose to a name that is very generic in a mountain ski town such as this (Park City, not Aspen, Colorado) I assumed he wasn't looking for high concept.
In that light, I've made a little concept change of my own:
Thanks,
Bryan

The last one looks like those joke motivational posters. You tell your client I said so, and show him a good example.
Third one's cool, but you have to bump up the tagline a little, it's pretty lost right now. Also I don't know about whimsical for a Property management company, but this one doesn't look whimsical to me eitherway.
#1 is a little boring, and I could have sworn I saw #2 before.

OMG the last one is horrid. Yes, it does indeed look like a motivational poster. Something you'd see on the set of The Office. It's awful, awful, awful. Tell your client we all said so.
I'd like to see the #3 leaf on the #1 design b/c "Property Management" is too small in #3 to be legible.
#2 has charm, but it's too wispy for a logo. It reminds me of Cranes note cards.
But you know, the whole quivering aspen leaf thing has been done to death. I just came from the spa where I have regular facials. That's their logo, in soft baby gray green. But if you think it works for you and your client, dandy. I think your renderings of the leaf motif (!) are very nice. I just prefer #3 for its movement -- although I think it's just a little more distorted for that effect than it needs to be. Straighten it up a little and you're there.

Lol, I red "the last one is horrid" then I was like, hmm that third one isn't that bad.. is it? But there is a fourth one! I didn't even recognize it as a logo.
The problem of number 1 and 3 is, and I have encoured this problem with many logo's, specially if name-logos starting with an E, with some imagination (or placing a piece of paper on the lower half of the logo) it looks like a penis. You don't want to have such a logo.
That leaves number 2 which looks good. Maybe a bit more variations on that? Different kind of fonts, trees, colours, have a play and I'm sure you'll come up with something even better.

Yeah... the fourth one really does look like a demotivational poster... I have no idea where the penis part came from.
To be completely honest, I thought this was for non profit organization for saving trees or something. In terms of subject, I like the font and spacing in the second one. Not too thrilled about not being able to read the Property Management part, however. I also like the leaf renderings. The first one in particular (maybe because of the color).

I would not say its a penis but if you look at the leaf in #3 it looks like a bum doing a poo!!
16 billion colours and you choose the one i cant create !??!
Yep #1 too ^^ take this logo and expect jokes from employees!

Agree with Mara that combining 1 and 3 with a little more work could create a #2 option. Version 2 with a little work could be your #3 option. Now all you need is one really good idea for your #1 option and it's ready to present to the client. Nothing here stands out as a winner - there are no strong, memorable marks here imho. I wouldn't want to be the client and have to choose froom what I see here, iow. How about something with snow or mountains? Is there a reason it's only trees?
Also - change the words on #4 so it reads...
ASPEN -
I'm skiing drunk down a mountain!
Well, Aspen is a city in Colorado but also a tree that is also famously associated with the area. The tree connection makes perfectly good sense, although it might be overused for that very reason.
Mara
Well there ya go - that makes perfect sense. Guess my brain synapses were refusing to fire again (palm slap to head).
Sorry people, what means "property management" business?
Something like branding company??? Because I see trees at Amazon or Telaviv everywhere.
The first key point: the client understands anything about branding?
yes I'm brazilian xD
Property managers are kind of like landlords. They handle the rent collection, lawn mowing, ulitities and janitorial services etc. for a building's owner. In this case, the "property" in question could be actual property, as in LAND, the management part being about preventing erosion, etc. That would make even more sense. In either case, such companies don't have a "warm and fuzzy" identity. This logo would seem to make them appear more humane.
Maybe we needed a more detailed brief about the client.
Mara
thank u mara :)
I think that he could improve the concept much more!

Please forgive me for assuming we were talking about a company located in Aspen, CO. But I love your new entry! It would be fun if you could find an anger management counselor to adopt it, with the necessary text change.
Mara
i'm dumb, i cant see all of the versions, i only see one. whats up with that? help please.
the one i see is "anger" with an angry leaf/house. it is so negative that i wouldn't want to stay there, or give them my business.
i need to see the rest

The original art was pulled and replaced with this one. I find that disconcerting myself and kind of wish people would stop doing it.

The angry leaf doesn't work by the way. Once you change "Aspen" to "Angry" the leaf has no purpose in the design. Ooops. :-)
I'd put a little dark could hanging over his head. Then change the colour to red.
