Auto content numbering Indesign

Hi all,

I'm working on a multipage publication that comes out every three months. It's set up with hyperlinks and throughout the document making it interactive and is able to have pages added/moved/removed without killing my links.

I saw a guy working with a similar setup for the contents section, he somehow had bookmarks throughout his document as objects that would refer the page number of that object back to the auto number. I don't think he was using a script because it updated automatically as things were moved.

If anyone can help me with this I'd be very grateful.
