Automator questions...anybody?

Ey, mac users who have used automator to do some repetitive tasks, I have a few questions...

1) The "resize" image task ONLY resizes the longest side of the image only? I mean, can't I just make all of the images fixed-witdh? Come on...

2) The "pad" image task ONLY uses a black background? buuu...

3) Why the "use 1 digit" number does not rename the files 99.jpg but instead 099? :S weird...

Seems that I'm missing something or Apple didn't pay too much attention to those details.

Anybody who knows? Please? :)

I know how to do it with actionscript, but making a workflow is much less complicated and faster.
