Seems that you'll have to use googlemail from now on and the gmail address may be changed, even for existing users.

I'm hoping this will only temporary. I kind of like my Gmail address as it is. Does anyone know who owns the copyright in the UK? maybe we should quietly tell them that it would be a good idea to let us keep our addresses, if they had been clever they should have purchased the domain years ago.

No, this change doesn’t affect existing Gmail addresses. For now, our plan is only to issue @googlemail.com addresses to new users. Trust that we will do the best we can to offer all our users a reliable and consistent email experience.
