Belfast BMX Racing

Hey dudes and dudettes

Here's a logo I've been working on for my local race track.

It's very run down due to a slump in BMX racing years ago. Racing was eventually discontinued, but now there's a group of guys who are re-discovering there youth, (me included) and we're going to apply for funding to hopefully have it flattened and rebuilt.

Let me know if you have any suggestions for improvement,...or ridicule, I can take it!

Cheers

i cant see much of anything wrong with it. i might look for a grittier font for the BMX part. but aside from that its fine.

Agree with wg - it's a serviceable logo. The way you extended the banner past the shield and then up to the two little flag things on each side is interesting. Bottom line - you could run with this the way it stands, but quite honestly - at this point I'm expecting more from you. I think you can still tweak it - a little polish never hurts.

What catches me right away is the conflicting curves you have going. Seems to me that BMX should have a fisheye effect rather than just matching the Belfast curve. And about that Belfast curve -- why not mirror the arc & fan effect of Racing to get more of an overall 3D effect? The two wingie things at either side seem too stiff for the overall curvy logo. As as has been pointed out, this isn't at all bad, but I don't get a sense of speed and excitement out of it. Since I gather your logo will partly be a calling card to potential bankrollers, why not give it some serious spice?

lol! google bmx number plate...

as an old BMXer myself, it didnt dawn on me that everyone wouldnt immediately recognize this thing as the number plate of a BMX bike

Oh yeh, I should have thought of that too.

One must never assume, wg. I rode BMX too.

I agree that the bmx font could be improved so I've been playing with a few different ones. Keep in mind I don't have the money too buy a font so I've been trawling the free font sites. Oh man, when you zoom in on some of them....I've never attempted a font but if I did I would at least take the trouble to centralise things.
I've got to that stage where I've stared at this thing to long, and not sure what I'm doing any more, like Art once said, just blindly chucking darts at the board.

Do any of these font changes spice it up enough Mara? Or do you think I should be going for more drastic action? I tried what you suggested re the fish-eye suggestion, but I don't think that's working.
I will try flipping the bottom ribbon to reflect the top. I did do it that way as a BMX plate does bulge out around the handle bars so it tends to end up looking that way, I've attached a picture to demonstrate this. I also did a colour one, just for fun :]

Thanks for the suggestions!

upper left and bottom right make my aging, ex-bmxer mind happiest.

Well, this is a nice cross-cultural learning experience for me :) Thanks for the background. As to your new tries, I think the one on the upper right is getting closer.

Well the plates have definitely changed since my day. Back then they were just an oval piece of plastic you stuck your numbers on. You got two of them - one for your handlebars and one for the frame. I thought you were stylizing the plate for this logo, but it's actually a more literal translation.

jeez art, how old are you?
at 43, i thought i was the oldest guy here?

I'll give you a hint: I was the perfect age when BMX started. There were only one or two people at my school who had bikes before me. But we had crap - we were turning standard Schwinn swinger frames into "BMX bikes". My little brother (13 yrs younger) - had all the benefits of the tricked-out bikes, the half pipes and the cool stuff that came later.

Well I went away and tried to figure out how I could 'polish' this one up.

On my last post my preferred two were top left and bottom right, which I was happy to hear was echoed by wgzn.....and sorry Mara, I'm going with my, and wgzn's inner bmx'er on this one, no matter how I did it, the fish-eye warping was not sitting well. We took a quick vote with the other guys at the 'mid-life crisis' club and this font was the most popular.

Any issues you guys can spot, last tweaks etc?

Sweet! :) I think the slight descent of the M's middle gives enough of that fisheye look to satisfy me. I'll bow to the dudes on this one, though. When it comes to butterflies and Mixmasters, I'm your girl :)

really nice progress. about the only thing id change is tighten the kerning between the B and M just a wee bit.

I like it. Couple very minor tweaks... the black line under the "BMX" should line up with the bottom of the side wings and the top of the black piece under "RACING" should line up with the sides of the banner that are hanging out the side. So there is a smooth transition from inside elements to the outside elements.

The super sharp points can be softened a little. And kern the BMX as WG suggested (BMX might go a little larger too - if you want).

Good job though - it's a nice piece.

Would that be enough curve?
And would you explain why I should avoid thin end angles qwerty.

It's better for plotters and other kind of applications work with curvy instead angles.

Plus like all small details they tend to fill in at smaller size.

Very nice piece - looks good. If you want to go a little further, I noticed "Belfast" and "Racing" don't quite match the curves of their individual banners. You can use the envelope distort to make them a little more accurate.

Thanks for the help guys, I'll get those last few tweaks done and then on to the next one.
