I, in my company (pinkograf-italy), study, project and make business cards and other product on translucent PVC, also on clear, metallized and white PVC. We have also other type of plastic materials, as PP, polycarbonate...

Transparent, metal, and any other substrate other than standard card stock, while clever, creative, and sometimes beautiful, is just plain stupid. Every one I've ever seen looks great laying on top of white paper, and absolutely unreadable (useless and stupid) the second you lift it up. They're gimmicks.

Not to mention that business cards are dinosaurs to begin with. You kind of have to have one, but not many people actually use a Rolodex anymore. People take your card, enter the contact info into their phone, PDA, email/address book on the computer, then toss the card in the trash anway.

I dunno, maybe it's just me not having enough coffee this morning...

Hi Ivan and JimD.
Why do you think so? What is the future for you? Here, in Italy where I'm working, it's impossible don't have business cards.
Here exsist also the rolodex, but it's an accessory for office. Here any activity (bar, restaurant, discoteque, hairdressers, writers, doctors, and other...) have the business card. Sometime also boys and girls have this accessory with only name and telephon number.
Please, explain to me your concept, it could be interesting! Thanks!

Hi JimD, depends on the working field and country.
adobe/agape [same person or a third? ;)] is right, in Europe the situation is different: I already did some transparent cards (printed at the printers recommended in the second answer :P) and all of them where enthusiastic about the response they got from their partners and customers, and especially when they attended a fair. In such a situation you win the "race" with an impressing impact, not with subtle elegance and surely not with an ordinary card. Of course afterwards the contact info is entered in the PDA, but the first impression sticks in the other's mind.
Apart from that here in Europe it's most of all agencies which go for such transparent business cards, because these substrates (which in addition offer impressing new graphical opportunities) transport a sense for innovative ways. So, here it's not only a question of such cards being USEFUL as provider of contact info but much more as a vehicle for CI.
I really don't think that they will go "out of vogue" that soon. Also because, at least here in the old world, it's obvious that there is a new trend away from virtuality back to tangible means of communication.

You are free to have your idea!
But a question: when do you go to customers, do you go with rolodex? How is your presentation?
The business cards is not only info, but is "image", "communication", "promotion", is art, also!

I think plastic business cards is yet actual, but the next product it'll be a type of plastic business cards "touch and sound".
If you touch the card, is created a sound! I think it'll be fantastic! When I have the product, I post a video!

I can get a paper cut by just thinking about mid-weight plastic films. I got one just the other day from a laminated gym membership card that has spent the last 5 years, untouched and patient in my wallet, just waiting for the right moment to attack.

These cards look kind of lethal to me.
