BLACK & WHITE
zagadka (131 points) | Tue, 2007-06-19 06:34am taking a CE typography class at SVA, NYC, the first homework is for print magazine cover, and the copy is "Black and White". We are not allowed to use any color. i got a go for the original sketch for this, and these are the final variations. I need to choose one and I already have a favorite, but need someone else's input. any comments will be highly appreciated.

i think it looks a little bit boring for the magazine cover. Try to make it more dynamic. And also at the moment it is hard to read "Black and white", I see b&wlhaictke instead.
...You could do with this!
White 'dummy' cover with small lettering in black saying 'black' and when you turn the page the inside 'real' cover is black with small white txt saying white. . . :)
OR ying and yang cover style using white and black. . .
Your grey wash is an element itself. . . you have 256 greys you know! ;)

i think this looks awesome.
I don't know if I like the top or bottom better.
the only thing I would consider is the placement of the &. It's not working where it is right now. But everything else is great.
Good to see some typographical work on this site. !!!
needs some transparency or texture ... if the letters were transparent as if the "multiply' filter was used on each, then there would be some visual interest where the letters overlap (and maybe overlapping them more might be worth looking at). How about something on that big gray background ... a pattern, texture, a photo, anything ??? ... it's a typography class and you're really condensing the typeface a lot, is that a good choice rather than finding the right font? As a rule, I prefer design to be true to the intended proportions of the typeface, where squashing and stretching is to be avoided, specially on headlines and very large point sizes where the beauty of the type really stands out.
I like the "print" top thing (though I think June is spelled wrong?)-- but the bottom parts don't do it for me. There are also gray hairlines inbetween some of the letters.
If I had to pick, I'd choose the top-- but it still needs a little more work. Good luck!
the interlaced words really messes with the viewer, and contrary to what many designers feel "works ," personally i like making the viewer work a little to see and not have everything explained to them.
i personally like the top one better.. it stands out more to me.
b&w normally depicts cleanness and simplicity. This looks messy . Think how the Ying Yang sign was done and go from there.
