PC vs MAC

It's an unfair fight, but it's fun anyway. If you've got 5 minutes to waste.

Safari width=100%

icon

I love Safari. It's fast, clean and pretty. The only thing that's bothered me right from the beginning is Safari's inability to fill the whole screen when clicking on the Zoom button. I understand how the Zoom works, and quite like the idea, except that, well, sometimes I like filling my screen with my application window; without losing the Dock - ie. MegaZoom.

So yesterday I discover a java bookmarklet that does just that. Safari-Stretch. Pull the bookmarklet onto your bookmarkbar, click and voila - Safari stretches to full screen, regardless of where your Dock is parked. Cute, nice and nifty.

Click it again and the viewport pops to 800px wide. In other words, if you are running Safari Stand with sidebar it will resize to 800px + sidebar. If the sidebar is off it will resize to 800px only. And yes, you can change the resize to 1024 (or "anything" else) if you want...

Open "Show all bookmarks" and edit the bookmarklet address.
This: ... window.resizeTo(800+window.outerWidth ... should change to
this: ... window.resizeTo(1024+window.outerWidth ...

Separations Preview in Illustrator CS2

One of the things that come in handy when prepping files for print is being able to preview how the printer will separate the artwork to colour plates. This is especially handy when you're working with a combination of spot colours, or a combination of spot and process. Unfortunately Adobe Illustrator does not offer this functionality. Don't give up hope though, help is at hand.

Internet Exploder Standalones

IE iconDeveloping and testing CSS based websites are often a challenge when it comes to Microsoft Products. Developers can spend up to 20% of development time providing alternative CSS for Microsoft's collection of broken browsers. The worst part is Microsoft browser installations only allow you to install 1 browser at a time. So once you've got IE7 installed, IE6 is gone and 7 needs to be uninstalled if you want 6 back.

iChat gets options with Chax

chaxI've been using iChat for a while now with my GMail account, but HECK it's frustating with all the little windows and iChat disappearing behind other application windows and always asking "...accept?"

So... Google to the rescue and I discover Chax, a nifty little plugin to make iChat a tad more user friendly. Here's a small list of what I consider highlights, from a long list of features:

  • Display Address Book nicknames instead of full names
  • Tabbed chats, allowing you to keep all of your chats together in one window
  • Always on top option for user lists, text chats, and audio or video chats
  • Unread message notification in the dock
  • Automatically reconnect when disconnected
  • Disable alert sounds when away, idle, or available
  • Show status changes directly in the message window
  • So, where do I get it? http://www.ksuther.com/chax/
