brand sketches - volition art

after almost a year delay in getting my design business going, i've finally back to it. i've gone through quite a few initial rounds of rough sketches, and i think i've got the concept direction i want to go in here.

self designing is, at least for me, the toughest part of design, so i hate everything of course, which tends to cloud the judgement. the basic concept is that i prefer minimal design, and i want to convey that through my own brand/mark. i also see this general design as having an infinity feel to it (rotating 180 degrees results in the same mark). colors are still pending, but will probably be warmer (red has got my eye).

all constructive comments welcomed and needed!

Digging it so far. Keep at it. I have a rotatable mark myself - rotate it 180 degrees and you get the reverse version of the same logo.

additional sketches added. there are certainly plenty i'm not crazy about (6, 9, 10, etc.), but that's part of the process right?

its an attractive mark. but its a pretty obvious and easy solution. i'd bet it wouldnt take too much digging to find it done nearly identically before...

i would disagree about the obvious and easy part. simple, yes, but i went through a number of concepts before this one. any constructive comments on how to improve in your opinion?

your name is volition art and you dont think a V and A are obvious or easy solutions?
...ok, if you say so - but i cant imagine what could be MORE easy or obvious in this case.

never the less, youre off to a good start

i would try to avoid the whole initials thing. thats the easy part - and that seems to be a lot of folks' jumping off point these days... mine included. so im not trying to be snarky or anything ; )

you might play with an icon based on the psychology of the words...

volition refers to will or choice. both v and a make arrow shapes. you could do some subtle road sign thing. or fork in the road, etc, etc...

ok, i would agree that using the initials is obvious... no argument there. i tried to go as abstract as possible while creating a singular mark that would translate to many applications well...

i agree that it could use more work, and i'll probably start extended sketches of some of the other prelims that i have drawn up...

thanks for the extra detail, that's all i was hoping for initially.

I agree about the obvious and easy part. You've got an interesting name you should put more thought into a creative concept. You've got some nice sketches but they border on the generic. wgzn is right, avoid the initials and try to make it something with more thought in it.

Agree with wgzn and Leaky. Work on an icon to go with the strong name that isn't initially about the initials. Get more conceptual. The words will allow the graphic to be abstract in idea, not just in execution.

I wouldn't mind seeing #7 with shorter extensions on the left and right - split the length between what you have and the regular version.

Number 4 is just popping out at me. I like it and think you should go with it. Nice job too!

I love the Victoria & Albert logo, only popping this in as you have the same initials for your business.

it may provide some inspiration.

At present you have no movement or idea in these logos (mine is much the same...)

It could work for a construction / oil / bank logo, but not for you. Free it up a little.

i really like 2 and 4. i think that those have something. maybe look at them a little more. you may want to try totally different ideas. these all feel like variations, which is totally fine but think outside of the box. im trying to "brand" myself, and at first it was very difficult but i just do what i would do with any other client. write down what you want, what you want the company to accomplish. then write 50 adjectives describing your company. these may sound like stupid exercises at first, but they will seriously help your ideas when you are sketching. i hope this helps.
