Brochure Cover for College of Science and Engineering

I am an advertising/graphic design student and have been hired to design a brochure for the Science and Engineering department for a university. I would like to get some critique on the covers to help me make a choice on which cover to go with - they are 8.5 x 8.5. I am leaning towards the black as i feel it is less restrictive and I do like the logo popping out into the negative space. Go ahead, rip them apart.

Go with the black. Like you mentioned, it pops out more, and stresses "Proving Possibilities" even more. Perhaps lower the opacity on the grey though, make it even more of a contrast. I really like the saying you have going, whether it was part of the project or you came up with it.

You might want to choose a different font for the subtitle "College of . . ." So it adds some contrast, but it doesn't look bad the way it is.

The only thing that bothers me is the "G" that over or under laps the dot in the "i" of possibilities. I suggest getting rid of the dot all together.

The white background is better without a doubt, there's not enough contrast in the black one (your word play doesn't work so well with it). Maybe if you dimmed the "dis" "im" more. Ultimately it all depends on how it looks in print though.

I don't care for the border much but it depends on what the brochure looks like I suppose. The logo could use better placement I think, probably center aligned, and give it some more margin.

It's a little bit dry, maybe it could use some graphic in the background? I dunno.

well, i originally came up with a graphic of a man outlined in math proofs but the client doesn't like it because in her opinion "the science and engineering field include women as well." so to stay clear, i decided to just play with the words instead.

they're both nice, i'd lean towards the black one and fix the spacing of the words due to the "g" over the "i" issue as mentioned.

but i'm shocked as to how much that school ripped off the Montreal Canadiens logo and debauchered it.

Until I looked at the full sized version I thought that there was just a Canadiens logo in the corner, which struck me as odd.

I too find it shocking that an institution would so obviously rip of a sports logo.

I prefer the black one.

I don't know about that logo, but the school had always had it *shrugs*.

Definitely the black for me.

The white, by far. I actually got the point of what the text was saying on the white, with the black, I did not.

Personally, I prefer the white background. The message seems much more subtle because the gray text sits back against the white background.

The black background version could work, though I believe the gray text could get darker against the black background so it doesn't stand out as much. Currently, the gray text and white text are getting closer in value due to the black background which is causing the slight color variation to lose contrast.
