Buying fonts, tips and legal questions
train (49 pencils) | Thu, 2005-12-01 18:30Mackie just posted a great review of FontExplorer which raised some questions about font ownership to me.
I have found a few great free font galleries, such as Misprinted Type, but would like to start a collection of unique, non standard fonts for commercial use.
How does everyone acquire fonts here (for commercial use, legal ways please)? I find it hard to imagine someone buying 2500 fonts, one by one, at $22-$100 a piece (or similar prices I see on some font sites). Can you buy a collection? Where would everyone suggest buying from?
And on that issue, what are the legal uses of fonts uses? How does one prove ownership of a font (has anyone actually run into problems with this)? Is there a font setting that proves your ownership/ do you need a receipt or original disk to prove ownership/ can you be sued for using a font in a commercial work without being able to prove that you bought it?
I have been wondering about this for a while.

All of the main Foundries do font sets. Everything from 20 fonts right up to Adobe who do a package called Font Folio which is pretty much the complete Adobe library and comes with 2,200 OpenType fonts and a licence for 20 computers (mac or PC).
The other ones that I would recommend are:
There are loads more too at places like:
And they are just the good ones also check out MyFonts for an exhaustive list of foundries and fonts available to buy.
