calling for help abt crash on AI n photoshop.

Sirco_L's picture

Hi, everyone. I'm desperate calling for help about crash on AI n photoshop.

I'm using CS3 n I have to say i reli love it. Some time ago, I installed some new chinese fonts from the site, http://font.85888.com/. It's rare to find such large collection of chinese fonts n so i was excited. But that's when the horrible things happened. Ever since i activated those fonts, my AI tells me it has unexpectedly quit whenever i open it!!!! I've installed AI again, n even try downloading the trial version from adobe site, it keeps saying so. I tried deleting the fonts i just installed, but it didn't help. Hell!

And then it's my Photoshop. At first, I thought to myself, thank god, it's alrite, cos' it opens without a problem, but this time horrible things happened when I use the text tool, whenever i hit the text tool or press t, it quits, QUITS!!

I have no idea what's going on here. I feel like I've lost one arm and one leg. Does anyone know how i can fix it?

Desperately,
Thanks.

Get a copy of

Font Finagler http://homepage.mac.com/mdouma46/fontfinagler/

OR the FREE (and VERY good)

Linotype Font Explorer. www.linotype.com

There is an option to "Clean Font and System Font Caches" run that and restart. It SHOULD HELP. You have identified the problem (bad or coprrupt Chinese fonts) so the next step is to rebuild the font caches. I am assuming u are using Font Book to activate and de-activate your fonts. Don't. Use Linotype Font Explorer instead.

BTW r u running OS X.5?

quit like before

Hi, ireid, thanks for reply so quickly.

I'm using Linotype Font Explorer, n running OS 10.4.11. I've tried in Linotype Font Explorer, Clean system font caches, clean application font caches, but still both AI n photoshop quit like before...aarrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr :(

Sirco_L's picture

ha, i mean

ha, I mean OS X 10.4.11, n i just updated my Linotype Font Explorer. I've also restarted my Mac a few times, didn't help...

Did you run Disk Utility

repair the disk and repair permissions?

You could also create a new user in the accounts system prefs and then log in to that new user and see if it still quits. If it doesn't its something that's INSIDE your user folder that's casuing it to quit, a corrupt pref or something.

That MIGHT help. If that doesn't then you need to do a WHOLE system re-install. . .which ISN'T as painful as it sounds. Just boot from your DVD and do an 'archive and re-install' and try that.

Creating a new user WORKS~!!!

hi, ireid, thanks for the tips again. I don't touch utility much so I don't have much idea how 'repair the disk and repair permissions' work but i tried it anyway, also the verify disk, ha. I think everything is normal, well it looks normal to me, I don't know. And then I restarted my mac. Nothing changed after that, they still quit.

Good news is when i log in as a new user, EVERYTHING'S BACK TO NORMAL~!!! I can open both photoshop and AI n then TYPE~!!! I feel like my arms and legs are back! (Well, all files i'm working on are on the old user account tho.)

So now is it concluded that there's a corrupt pref? if so, then how can i kick it out? I don't wanna reinstall the whole system tho I know it is needed sometimes, well.

Thank you so much again, ireid! MILLIONS THANKS FOR YOUR BIG HELP~!!!!!!

tried that immediately

hi, natobasso. I've tried that immediately in Linotype Font Explorer, deactivate them, then delete them. It didn't help. I've forgot how I deleted them already. When right click the fonts, there're options 'remove from set/ remove from Linotype Font Explorer/ move files to trash/ delete files immediately which this option is said not cannot be undo'

I guess i picked delete files immediately cos' i never wanna see those fonts again~!!! btw, anyone can tell me the difference between those 4 options?

anyway, thanks, nato.

Linotype

Does three things, or CAN do three things. . . manage your fonts for you by moving them, copying them or leaving them 'unmanaged' by leaving them where you want them. Personally I don't let FE manage my fonts for me because that way I know where everything is and I'm used to that since the days old. Actually the ONLY app that I let do its things is iTunes (it moves all your music by COPYING it to the music folder, so that's cool for me. . . but with my fonts I like it where I want it. :)

That being said, depending on HOW you installed the fonts in FE in the beginning (the wizard) when you go to REMOVE them from FE it will ask you HOW you want it done BASED on how your fonts are organised, that is, if FE moved it to another folder or left it where it is, you could just MOVE it from its existing place or MOVE the files to the trash but don't EMPTY the trash OR do the whole nine yards and move it out of FE and then into the trash and then empty the trash. . . bye bye font FOREVER! :) Hope this answers your question.

Remove from set: just takes

Remove from set: just takes it out of that font set, if a set is created.

Remove from FE: Takes it out of the FE font list. Font remains in its location.

Move files to trash: Just like it sounds. :) Just doesn't immediately delete the file.

Delete files immediately: Moves to trash and deletes the font.

Where are your fonts stored? Hopefully not system/fonts or library/fonts...

FIXED!!!

OMG, ireid, It's fixed!!! looking for where my fonts are stored, i found that those evil fonts I installed were not completely deleted.

Fortunately, I screen cap a pic of names of those fonts, so i can track them down. I thought I had completely deleted that set. Now, i find out there's one font left somewhere else, WTF. It was doubled somewhere?! It's been bothering me for a week, A WEEK!!! Holy!

Thank you again, ireid. If not for you, maybe i never again track down where the fonts are stored. WAHAHAHA. Thank you so much!!!!

You're welcome

And what's the moral of the story?

"Don't install strange fonts!"

A good place to get free fonts is dafont.com BUT I would recommend BUYING your fonts. That way you won't EVER have a problem with a fonts being 'bad' and screwing up you machine! :)

Now if my artists would only listen to me here in the studio!

lesson learned!

lesson learned, be reli reli in control of where u keep your fonts @3@.

I know about dafonts.com, it's indeed incredible. But i was looking for chinese fonts... I need to type in chinese tho I dun want to (not becos' i hate chinese just cos' i type slow in chinese..azzzz, hahahahaha)

I reli found great chinese fonts site is rare... :(

Sirco_L's picture

leaving them 'unmanaged' by

leaving them 'unmanaged' by leaving them where you want them<<<<<<< yes, i want them stay where i want them!!!

so usually, when I download new fonts, they're automatically saved on desktop, what i do is simply drag them in to FE ( i would create a new folder for them for every time, i'm looking for a particular style).

So to remove fonts in my case, to say bye bye fonts FOREVER, just simply click 'delete files immediately' will do?

Hahahaha, thank you again, ireid!!
