can you export text to Word from InDesign?
joecab (97 points) | Thu, 2005-04-14 19:58Quark can do it (kinda -- it's never been very pretty), with styles intact. All I see built into ID is RTF which isn't enough 'cause I want those para styles. There must be a third-party solution that I just can't find ...

I believe you can but I never tried it myself.

Rich text is all you need. It exports all the styles for me, though you usually have to rename/merge the styles once in Word.

Wow! This is news to me. I could have sworn I tried once and didn;t notice that, but I'll give it another shot. Thanks -- if this works it'll be a lifesaver.
I don't see RTF as an option in Indesign's export... how are you doing that?

To get the 'Rich Text Format' option you have to select the text with the type tool before preforming the export.
Kind of a silly question but, why in heaven's name are you exporting to Word? :) Printers hate Word files...

No question is silly. I asked the same one.
Put a big high-paying client, and fill-it-out-yourself electronic stationary together with a kick-butt design, and you suddenly have an urgent desire to make Indesign export to Word.

Excellent answer!
Why not a fillable pdf?

Because training everyone in their entire staff on Acrobat is a more daunting task. These are people who barely know how to use their own email.

I have a customer who doesn’t speak English as their first language.
They have sent me datasheets (PDF’s) to make a catalogue from; we agreed that the text would be directly inserted with out me editing it.
They now want to make changes to the text, however, they can’t work on it directly in Indesign. They have asked me to provide them the text in word. I have seen your fix, however it is a 200 page document and each section of text is in a separate box. They also want me to include the tables and graphs. Is there a quicker way to make the changes or give them a text editable version.
It is very difficult to communicat so I want to do this as easily as possible.
Thank you. CK
The universal language is called money:
The ORIGINAL estimate was for you to JUST place the copy right?
NOW they want to do something that has made you realise that you need to REVISE the estimate of time AND COST: Resend a NEW quote explaining what you have just said here. That if this to be done on YOUR side it will cost X.
NOW. Onto your problem: If its a STRAIGHT case of PULLING the text from a PDF then you will need a copy of Acrobat (which will be covered in your new estimate get it?)
IN Acrobat Professional you can export the text from a PDF as a word document. I cannot guarantee that this would work, foolproof, NOT having seen the state of these PDFS you refer to, but Acrobat is, to me, the Swiss Army knife of PDFs (go figure!) so you might be able to get through quickly. . .
OR I may be just talking through my hat. . . back to you. :)
