Cannot open a EPS file
Saikee (41 pencils) | Thu, 2007-12-13 21:09What am I doing wrong? I placed an EPS file in illustrator to edit. to begin with, I cannot edit the part that I wish to work with. in this case its the logo...there is only one layer in this file ( Has it been flattened?), does that mean I cannot edit the content. I need to somehow extract the logo to place in another file.????????????? HELP please!

sending the message twice.
Because when you say: "I cannot edit the part that I wish to work with." could mean two things: Its 'Locked" (check the layers palette and see if the layer is locked or go edit-unlock all)
Or its a bitmap image and the only way to "edit" it is to open it up in photoshop.

I see no lock icon in the layers palette, though the file itself as I see on the desktop has a small lock Icon showing. What could that mean?
The EPS file i have is of a poster image and I need to extract the logo from the entire image and Back ground colour.
I opened the file in PS, the logo looks rough around the edges. I need it to be crisp vector. I also have the same file in a Jpeg format. In illustrator the Jpeg logo looks of poor quality.
I apologise for my poor knowledge of formats and how to work with them. Somehow I have to figure it out, I suppose with you forum member's help.
The EPS you're working with could have been generated through InDesign or Photoshop - which would mean very limited - if any - ability to work with vectors - if there's even any vectors in it at all.
Sounds like raster images in an EPS file. Try to see if they can send you something different.
This is what you are doing wrong. Just open the eps file in illustrator, don't place it, if you want to edit it.

Good catch, natobasso!
Thanks! It's usually the simplest answer that is correct 90% of the time. :)

I still cannot remove the logo from its background! If I take it into PS and remove the logo through channels technique from its back-ground, the result is not so crisp clean logo as one would get from a vector image....as for the final project the logo needs to be reduced to 20% of its original size.like a little dot....the smaller it gets, more awful it looks.
I asked the clients to send me the same file in another format and now I have a Jpeg High Quality file..Can I achieve better results from Jpegs, any suggestions how to go about it in PS or if you could direct me to a tutorial link where i could find related tips.
Cheers.

Unfortunately a JPEG is NOT what you want. What you need is a vector Illustrator file, NOT a Bimapped photoshop document of bitmap jpeg or gif or png or anything that does not use vectors. A vector PDF is just as good. :)

Agreed. Jpg is even worse format for your needs, I'm afraid. Get Illustrator eps or ai file and make sure it's in a version you can open.

uurggghhh!
on a mission now to find a vector PDF if not an AI file. I doubt the client has the original AI file.
Thank u for your clever suggestions.
Is it a logo? You could try Brands of the World to search for a vector file if it's a big enough company.

How detailed is said logo? Try live trace or vector magic.
Are you sure you tried "Unlock All" (it's under Object in the toolbar)? Even if it was flattened, you should be able to select the paths that make up the logo then copy and paste to a new Illustrator file, if the file is indeed a vector file.
Pokie's idea of tracing the logo (and smoothing out the results afterward) is another VERY good option. Be sure your client knows they're paying for the time you spend doing this. They goofed when they neglected to send you a proper file to work from.

Tell me about spending time cleaning and fixing this logo, that could have, simply be sent in its vector file format and then they expect me to keep with the deadline!
I shall try your tip later on today after completing my motherly duties.
have you checked for any clipping or compound paths?
