Can't shut down.

I tried to shut down from the Apple menu, but it won't work. The pop-up window doesn't come up. I'm afraid to just pull the plug. Is it safe to do that?

I don't know if it is safe but I have done it before.

Just because you're not paranoid doesn't

mean they aren't out to get you.

you can press Alt (Option) while selecting the restarty to avoid the pop-up window. or you can type "restart" into the Terminal. that should work.

You might try the key cammand as well:

Control-Command-Eject Quit all applications and restart

this happened to me just the other day. i had just used OnyX, a freeware utility, on my PowerBook (with 10.3.9) to customize OS X's login window. it turns out i really wish i hadn't.

after customizing the login window (and enabling Fast User Switching to logout and quickly login again), the Sleep, Restart, and Shut Down commands no longer worked. i forced LoginWindow to quit (from the Activity Monitor) and then all the users in the login window simply disappeared.

aiyee!

i had to reinstall OS X just to be able to login again.
