catching up with web
sirmortimer (16 points) | Fri, 2007-11-23 01:40hi all,
I come from a print background and I realized that I can't go any further with inks and have to get into some web stuff. I know basics of html, flash and css from the college and have a decent sense of aesthetics learned in print. However , I haven't done a website since college. I was wandering what should I get into in order to get back on track. I want to start with bulding a nice web 2.0 portfolio site. So far I am considering
Flash/Actionscript combination (because it's flashy:))
Adobe Flex (because I believe in Adobe)
AJAX (but for that I understand I'd have to learn XML and java)
What would you suggest? What languages? what software?
Thanks!

Start with your HTML and CSS and build really quick loading pages. There's a movement away from Flash only sites because they aren't google searchable -- very important to building the popularity of a site.
However, flash has its place. It's great for motion graphics (obviously) and presentations.
Web 2.0 is a mixed bag as well, and it's based on WordPress and/0r Drupal. I find the style kind of limiting as it's interactive but doesn't choose a presentation style much beyond text.
Go to http://www.w3schools.com for any tutorials/instruction you might want, and to validate your sites as you create them.
Of course, as in print, the website design is determined by its usage.
