CD Project: Songs in the Key of Evil

CD Project: Songs in the Key of Evil

This was my idea for the CD cover for "Songs in the Key of Evil". I am going to use the theme of the veins\vines throughout the rest of the boolklet to give it an organic look and feel.

Dark. And with the veins\vines twining throughout the rest of this piece I think it's going to turn out damn fine.

So...Nature is evil? Who HAVE you been talking to?

But that little conceptual issue aside, this rocks. I think the ultra-realism of the hands is skin-crawly creepy. I love the transition from vines to veins there. That really works great.

Would you consider trashing up the "songs in the key of evil" background text a little? The whole Gothic font thing...I dunno. Seems a little too obvious and therefore ordinary, compared with the creativity of the rest. Do you have something else up your sleeve/bat wing for that angle?

I'll agree with you on the Gothic font issue. It does seem a bit too easy for the topic. I might try and use some grunge text, or even incorporate the veins into a new, more organic typeface. I'm also glad you said that about the hands, because I thought about simplifying them a bit to match the face. CREEPY IS GOOD!

Great work, I'd only say to make the hands match the face. The sepia tone works and should be applied to all the skin tone in the cover.

That's what was bothering me about it--the hands are too photographic and they don't blend in with the rest of the illustration style. Agree with Mara about the text as well, however doing the text in the vines might be overkill; guess you'll have to try it and have a look-see. Re: fonts--I'd also try something a little more simple (sans serif?) so as not to compete with the base.

really creepy. Good work! Just be sure to continue the theme throughout the entire thing

Hey it's Buckethead with a Carrot Top mask!.... No no no I'm just kidding! No really it's a great picture! I do agree that the text should be different. Maybe something that looks like tree roots being that there is a tree branch effect throughout the picture. Whatever font style is used, the imagery of the text should maintain a dark feel to it. Keep it evil!!! ---Will

I definitely think the scary theme you're trying to convey is working!!!

Before I read your description, I KNEW exactly what you were trying to convey. Good job.

Is this an atypical format? Most CD covers are square, this looks more like it's sized for DVD.

I don't know if this would really jump off the shelf at buyers as it looks pretty typical of other CDs in the same heavy metal genre. It'd be interesting to see something completely different than what's out there. Obviously not rainbows and unicorns, but perhaps something typographic? Or less predictable colors?
