Chocolate pilcrow
Fabio (87 points) | Sun, 2009-12-06 22:01Not sure if Critique's the right place, but I'd like to share my latest project with you. I would like to hear your thoughts on it :)
For a while I had been thinking about making a chocolate version of the pilcrow. So, at the end of my first year as a freelance graphic designer I decided to try and make this letter. It makes a nice, personal gift to my clients.
I have put a description of the process on my weblog, but since it's in Dutch I'll put the link to the pictures in here as well ;)

It was a great project and tomorrow I'm going to finish the last batch.
Let me know what you think!

The shape's a bit phallic.
It's cool. You should design some cool packaging for it too!
Cooollll idea! This year add in the text: EAT ME
"Art -- the one achievement of Man which has made the long trip up from all fours seem well advised." - James Thurber
Thank you :)
I used a very basic packaging, the white cookie-bag you see in the picture. Because both the pilcrow and the chocolate come from older crafts I thought it fitted the letter.
Here's a better picture of it:

And ehm, I'm not too sure about the phallic reference ;)
Good idea. Just to tell the others: In the Netherlands we eat chocolate letters each year at Sinterklaas, which is our own version of Santa ;-) Held 20 days earlier though, at 5 december. Everybody gets their starting initial in chocolate, so I would get a J. Characters dols are from A to Z, so a pilcrow would be unique =)

Thanks for the addition, totally forgot that! :)
Here's some Wikipedia info on the man:

Very nice concept, is it also in White?
What did it cost to make in total?
Do you have some left over? Ik zou wel een witte lusten.. :)
If you want to come and pick one up in Rotterdam, I can save a white one for you.
And then I will also tell you about the costs ;)
I'm probably moving to Rotterdam in 2010 ;-) To the Willem de Kooning Academie.
But you don't have to save the pilcrow though ;-)

That's a coincidence.. I will leave the Academy in 2010 ;) What are you going to study?
I still have the silicone casting mold, so a new letter is no problem...
Advertising. I think it's the best HBO in the Netherlands to study that.

Fuck it, if it's chocolate it's an automatic win in my books!

Check out what I've been up to lately!

I'm going to print it out and eat it.

Does anyone else get the impression that photo looks like it was done in a 3-D program?
Interesting concept. Definitely going above and beyond in my book.
That's probably the poor quality of the iPhone camera :D
So cool! Any possibility of packaging these in an old wooden tray (perhaps using cardboard instead) like the ones used to store lead type? Or is that too "permanent" for such a one-time-a-year thing? The boxes could be reused every year with a different character. An ampersand would be fun. You have a whole new industry there! If I were a printer or editor, I would love to have something like this to give as holiday treats to clients.
Mara
I'm thinking about the idea of making other character, or maybe different types of medium.. But the idea is also about combining old crafts and tradition (typography, chocolate making, Sinterklaas) in modern times, so maybe I will think of something completely different next year :)
Mara's got a point... Have you thought of taking this to the next level? This looks like a commercially viable project.

Building Creative Brands for People
Not really.. And I'm not sure if I want that. It was supposed to be a one time only project, so unless people are asking for it I don't think I will be selling them :)
