Clip art?
pokie (1198 pencils) | Sat, 2007-05-12 04:08Do you use it? Tell the truth.
I use it more than I'd like, I tend to get jobs that have to be turned around in less than a day. So it goes like this: I end up pulling carrots and other vegetables off of clipart.com and try to put them together/alter/whatever to make them look nice. OY.
Did I mention I work in packaging?

I am an official anticlipartist, I believe designing means creating.

Never in fact.
I never even used the crappy clip art you got with M$ Office that half the world's PAs discovered resulting in a large chunk of business documents looking like Word threw up on them.

I NEVER use clipart, especially the kind that you can download or purchase. But I do have to admit, I occasionally use wingdings or that sort of "clipart" when I, too, need to have a logo as a quick turnaround (i.e. the client is riding my ass).
But I don't know if that is classified as clipart, per se. It's technically typography, but instead of the letters, you get a little design.
If I need a specific image, like a vector image of a pug, for example, I just go to google and type in pug and go to images, then I find the best image and then place it into Illustrator and turn it into vector art with the pen tool—which in turn, becomes MY work that I have created from a photo.
But I do use (quite frequently) stock images from photos.com. I have no choice when it comes to professional photos. No $$$ in budget to hire a professional photographer.
Hope that helps. I feel your pain though.

I'm not a big fan of reinventing the wheel, so if it exists in a clip art book, and I need it, yeah. I'll use it. These are things like flags, maps and globes, basic shapes, road signs.. You get the idea.
Never for branding or corporate ID of course, but there's a time and place for clip art.

It was for a good reason though, I was taking the piss out of the Brandon and Amanda critique and couldn't be arsed to spend time to draw hats.
