Co Op Poster
Korteenea (207 pencils) | Mon, 2005-06-27 16:36I work as a Mac IT tech assistant ("co-op") at Villa Julie college, and one of the things we've been trying to do is make the student body aware of our presence and that we can help them with their tech problems. We're putting up a series of posters that will carry a similar visual style and logotype, and which will instruct students on common issues they'll face in the Mac labs, such as managing color profiles and using the laser proofing printers. This particular poster set is the first of the series and will introduce the other posters (which will be posted throughout the course of the year.) It also makes use of an RJ-45 network jack as a motif, which will be a common motif throughout all of Villa Julie's IT departments and programs.
This is a set of 6 variations on the introductory poster, each in a different color scheme. The same vibrant set of colors will be carried through the other posters in the series to provide unity and "pop" so that we can be sure students will see them.
I've attached a larger sample of a single poster so you can read the preliminary copy text.

All I can say is that it's great! Nice campaign, clear communication. Congrats
as Ivan said it's great, i just don't like the color of the "to make all the....." text.
peace.
It's supposed to be white text... the JPEG filter seems to have mucked it up. Also, the fact that there's so much magenta probably makes the white look more blue-ish. It looks better when printed on tabloid.
Or is the fact that the text is white the thing you don't like? lol
looks great... nice tech feel, but with more of an old school digital edge to it... great work!
hehe. thanks. :-)
I just realized that it resembles the head of a guitar... ya know, where the keys are. Sorta gives it that rock-inspired look, I think. Like Woodstock. I think I might have seen a Lukova poster like that too.
very cool. I like it alot!
Is 6 wires accurate? Or is some smartalec going to wonder why the computer-geek-helper-people-at-college-who's-official-title-I-don't-remember didn't even put the right number of wires on the poster! lol. just a thought. :c_
Love the poster.

Lol, yeah I thought of that one... but most of the students that it targets are designers, so they understand the whole artistic license thing, hehe. And the big cheeses in the IT dept. didn't seem to have a problem with it, so I figure it's okay.
Very, very nice. I don't care for the pink one, but that's just me. This looks like something out of the 50s or so - something like Rand or Bass might design. But with the wires, it gives it the tech feel.
Congrats, IMHO it's one of the better pieces I've seen on this board. Communicates a message on more than one level. Bingo!
it's been driving me absolutely nuts because it seems so familiar, the colors and the use of text. I was thinking more along the lines of Max Bill or Josef Müller-Brockmann (one of my personal favorites) but I could be confused, it has been a couple years since those history classes.
It seems to remind me of a particular piece with the colors in the wire but I can't seem to place it. If anybody can find it you could sure put my mind to rest.
Only thing I'm really not down with is that text in the corner. White's fine and all, but I'd make it a bit bolder so that it doesn't get lost so much, and consider changing the column width or justification so that the tracking isn't so awkward. And I think all the text on the poster needs some kerning.
Great stuff, though.
Hi Korteenea,
I think its good design, nice colors, but... I think the layout needs to be redone as well as the typo-rarchy.
So right now the "i'ts out goal" and the colorful graphic scream for out attention.. I think they are clashing, competing for attention instead of working together. Also the white cable causes the eye to drify off the page to the righ instead of leading the eye, left, to the name of the co-op.
I feel that if you are to have a graphic with text tilted diagonally, the other elements on the page.. the copy and the logo need to work with it.. maybe the text blocks need to be at 90 degs. to the graphic text.
Also, I the white rectangle around the colored wires + text seems superflous.
In the graphic, I dont see why the Input and output text graphics need to be bigger than the rest...
I think there is too much contrast in the graphic - color and size.
Hope this is helpful.
Thanks for the suggestions!
I like the idea of putting the rest of the text at an angle... I'll give it a shot and see how it turns out. The white rectangle is part of the illustration... it's supposed to be an abstracted RJ-45 head on a Cat-5 network cable (lol, except it's obviously not Cat-5 due to the lack of the two remaining wires, hehe.)
I suppose I should have mentioned before that in addition to the network cable being a visual theme throughout the entire IT department, the term "Input / Output" is also a major theme... that's why I made them slightly larger and put them on both sides.
There are some major kerning issues going on throughout this whole poster. The top right also has WAY too many hyphenated words. There shouldn't be any and currently there are three. I may consider making the white font bigger if not also with a thicker stroke to make it easier to read on that background.
I totally agree that my typography could use work. I haven't yet had any formal training in typography... this upcoming semester will have my first real typography course.
I'll definitely get rid of those hyphens, and I'll see what I can do with the text, as I may also try some of the other suggestions as well.
Thanks! :-)
You know I love them! The pink one is hanging up in the room. It's simple but creative. And I think that typography looks fine to me. I didn't really notice the hyphens. But one thing....now you have to change "co-ops" to "associates".

Oh drat, you're right. That'll throw off the look of the logotype, lol. ><
The idea is really cool!
Though I got reminded my education, I cant' remember how many RJ45 CAT5 I've fixed trough my education period.. *laughing*
Don't abbreviate associates. ;)
I think you need to loosen up the leading on the heading. Otherwise i like it.

first i thought it is a paintbrush ... plus it is in so many colours ... probably some home renovation or paint sellers
then i noticed some input/output text and decided that probably some printing house or something ...
then i read yr description ...
well, anyways - my first impressions for what it is worth ...

i think the colors in your poster may be not good.
