Coffee Shop Logo Round 2
common (39 points) | Sat, 2009-11-14 14:50**Hi again, I reworked the logo based upon some of your generous feedback. I still prefer a round logo, but I took a quick detour to visit this place.
I want something that embodies a coffee shop without reading any text and I'm not sure this does that, but I think it looks pretty nice.
Thanks, again, for your help. Most of you, anyway. :P

This idea has some potential but I think it can be taken even further. That font is horrendous, I would go with a sans serif, something modern. And that doesn't look like a coffee bean - either draw one or get a photo of one. And watch the spacing of your letters. You have a lot of awkward overlapping.
If it doesn't sell, it isn't creative.
Thanks, D; I'll give it a shot and re-post. Sounds like sound advice.
1) first, this greyscale isn't good.
the thin stroke is awful
2) starbuck uses crest.
I know it's hard to don't make a "wanna be a starbuck"
3) OK you don't want the word "cofee" or "cafe"
but all the people want it.
4) the text is not centered from central circle. look the space between them.
5) the "o" is a cofee bean but could be "zero" too.
6) I don't trust int this brand.
yes I'm brazilian xD
More great comments - thank you qwertyale. Question: What would make the people trust a brand? Would it be colors, such as green or blue? Maybe the tagline would help? It is, "Coffee Roasters & Fine Teas".
Sorry for my rude, dull comments but I think we have to be prepared for the "real life".
Exactly, I would like to see associated values or shapes that really makes difference between competitors.
All coffee brands could use your "O" that seems like beans, it's not the winner in terms of identity reference. And the name of your brand uses "C" and "G" not "O".
I would never use green if the logo is nearest crest like Starbucks.
Never only blue too because is a cold color.
You could associate these colors with others, I dunno.
yes I'm brazilian xD
Like warm organic colours.

The only thing I like about this is the name - Common Grounds - so you just missed out on my second "I hate all" ever. But that name sounds so good I'm wondering if it's not taken already by a coffee shop somewhere. You might also want to run that by some people and see if the word "Common" makes it sound like the coffee is not tasty. Know what I mean? It's a great name for me - but I'd get other opinions too.
So far as the art, when you do text on an arc - you need to arc the individual letters as well. IOW - the bottoms of the letters will no longer be flat - they have a curve to them, and the letters get proportionally larger the farther they get away from the center (so "common" would have fatter letter tops than bottoms and "grounds" would be the opposite - fatter bottoms). Use the envelope distortion doo-dad in Illustrator and it will actually arc the letters as opposed to just placing the regular letters on a curve like you did. And kerning becomes more important in this type of situation - you really need to work it. This kerning is no good all around.
As qwerty noted - the outlines are too thin. I'm not even sure you need them if you just outline the whole thingwith a fat stroke and fill it with a background color behind the letters. Play with it. The coffee bean idea might work - but I doubt it.The initials or a coffee cup or something else would probably work better in the center.
That's just horrible. Nuff said.
Without my sense of direction, I don't know where I'd be.
Back to the drawing board.

This new one doesn't really say coffee shop. Did you research other coffee logos?

Neither does Starbucks, but I agree completely. I'm tryyyying to avoid going to the mug! I have been also trying to go all graphics - no photos- but maybe an image of a bean will help. Stay tuned and thanks again! I checked out your FB page - nice work!
Thanks! When you do get a new idea, post it as a new critique piece. Also, try doing the word association game. Maybe you'll find something that will represent coffee and won't be cliched. Have fun!

See like this one is nothing new, but still a strong identity

This one is a little flimsy, but I like what they did with the G

There certainly are a bunch of "Common Grounds" out there! The name was inherited, but it is a good one. Check out their current logo www.commongrounds.com
I like it, it just needs to be updated, IMO.
I think the 'c' and 'g' need some space between them.
And the words need to be pushed over to the right a bit to put some space from the 'cg' graphic.
Could also benefit by putting 'coffee roasters and fine tea' on one line equal length to the headline text, and maybe change it to the same font as well to stay more uniform.
I never really like the use of an '&' symbol in a logo either so maybe replace that with the actual word.
It's definitely a step up from their current logo, so keep at it!
Thanks, Stef!
No problem!
...help me out with mine! :)
ABOUT THE SECOND ROUGH:
I hate all.
hate when force letters to assume unnatural shapes.
it seems nazi medical experience or torture.
you can accomodate letters... but not deform them.
yes I'm brazilian xD
Knew I saw that name before.
That bean actually looks promising to me.
@common. Why do you hate us so much?
Without my sense of direction, I don't know where I'd be.
Why do you say that?
Play with the phrase "common ground." You know what it means, and why it was chosen for this shop: it's a place where people, coffee varieties, and even cultures meet "on common ground," suggesting peace and plenty for all in the pleasant environment of a café. The play on words with "grounds" is almost incidental.
Can you work with that idea a little, and get away from diddling with fonts?
Also, the tagline is much too small relative to the main logotype. This is a common problem with new designers tackling the first logos. Eliminate the tag and see how your next designs work.

Thank you, Mara. That was helpful. I have some ideas that I will try to express and run by you.
