Color loss exporting from Photoshop

I am having trouble maintaining my color when I export in Photoshop. An example is attached:

This is a screenshot (no problem with color loss using the apple+3 technique) of the original on the left and the .png on the right. Notice the massive color loss? I have tried almost every way of exporting (.jpg, .png, save as for web, save as) I can think of.

Any ideas on why this is happening? Is this a sign from above to upgrade to the newest version of Photoshop? I can't think of why there would be so much loss (some is expected).

The photo is shot with a digital rebel XT in .jpg format.

All I can suggest is that your Photoshop is working in a different color profile than your system.

Changed the color profile to the default settings (don't ever remember changing them) and am getting somewhere.

When I open a freshly saved file, it asks me if I want to use the embedded profile, convert document's colors to the working space, or discard the embedded profile. If I choose to 'Discard the embedded profile' it will display the color correctly, but if I open it in Preview or Firefox the color loss is there.

If I choose 'save as' or 'save as for web' I still get the color loss in the preview and file.

So where is the 'save as' or 'save as for web' embedded color profile settings?

You need to convert your image in sRGB (Photoshop> Image> Mode> Convert To Profile: sRGB IEC61966-2.1) BEFORE Saving for the Web.

Make sure your image has the sRGB profile and everything will work fine.

I gave up on a solution to this and have had horrid color coming from photoshop for a year.

I found the solution though (and since this thead shows up as #1 in google for a similar search, I thought I would enlighten everyone else with the easy answer)

Your color profile must match your export profile. To change your export profile, click 'save as for web' and to the upper left of your 'save' button there is a little arrow (unlabeled to make it easy on you). Click on that arrow, and you will find "Use Document Color Profile" which will fix all of your problems.

11 months and I finally fixed it. Thanks for all the help.

This is the solution I have been waiting for. Too bad no one else on the web knows how to properly prepare and prevent this issue. To you, I tip my hat as you have just made my life 1053% simpler.

Ever since a reformat some weeks ago I have been trying to figure out why p-shop was losing color in export - now I know. Thanks so much!

Your solution didn't quite work for CS3, but this page has the complete answer:
