Color Replace example
sdimbert (68 points) | Tue, 2005-09-06 19:33I teach a journalism class (in addition to my digital art class) and want to suggest some fresh looks for this year's book. I am going to suggest that my students create a graphic like this for each member of the class, but before we go through the time and expense of shooting the portraits, I want to know what y'all think I can do to improve the look.
I'm not planning on this many layers for each student - we would use the four or five colors we settle on for the color palate for our book.
Please comment on the color effect as well as the displaced text; the original photo is the girl you see on the right, courtesy of sxc.hu.
Thanks!

It's a good retouching exercise, but what's the real purpose of an image like this? I don't really find it all that appealing. What exactly is the context that this would be used in?

The point is to tie portaits of each senior together with a "look" that is consistent across all of their individual pages. Right now, each senior gets a page of the book to use as they please. I would like to tie those pages together with a uniform effect that we would place in a corner of the page.
So, for each person, the portrat would be different, but the colors would be the same, in the same order.
It's a good idea in theory but I think it's just cheesy. Not really sure how you could do what you want, but this just doesn't seem like a viable solution.

i think what grafixforlife is trying to say is what is the purpose behind each student being repeated 4-5times in 4-5colours? This myself, has me confused. I don't see the message your trying to portray?

You have colorful seniors written "Yearbook" all over them. Sort of portrays a happy tone about the school, I guess?
However, I would also agree that the message is shadowy and sort of confusing.

Looks like it's advertising a repro shop rather than students. Why not let them have their own page and do what they like with it? Maybe design a name plate to tie them together but think you'll get a much nicer result if you give them freedom.
Somw will be awful I'm sure but then you can start a discussion on how to make it better. I'm sure you'll get some unexpected gems :)

Personally I think it's bright and cheerful. But then I'm a sucker for rainbows! :)
If you want to have a graphic that ties each of the students' pages together, why don't you take the portraits and get them each to do the retouching the way they want to, giving them this one as an example? You could set some constraints for similarity, then give them the creative expression to make it their own.

In particular the blue purple and pink shirts, it looks like you adjusted the hue and saturation and are getting some funky colored shadows on the shirts and where the shirts meet the hair. Those colored hats also have this problem.

I don't like the "yearbook" superimposed on the pants. It looks forced and takes away from the simplicity of the concept.
Otherwise I like the color palette. Repetition is always mesmerizing. It would be fun to do the same with the skin colors and race. From indian to african to latino to caucasian to asian to etc. I guess it's nearly impossible to do well though.
I you haven't already, try making your color corrections/shifts in LAB mode rather than hue. You will be able to preserve the shadows and highlights by editing the curves on the A and B color channels and leaving L (lightness) untouched. Of course it will also depend on your masks. Give it a try.
One you figure out the color change values, you can apply them to the rest of your masked photos using an action. Big time saver on a project like a yearbook.

Oh wow, that's a useful tip. Always learn something new, eh? I really should read up more on using the LAB colorspace.
But as a motif...it may be a bit too strong. It, in itself is repetitive. If the repeating were to repeat on every page — unless it was quite small — the concept will die by page three. Colors so vibrant all over the place will also distract from most anything else happening on the page.
I don't think that letting high schoolers come up with the concept is the best idea. I churned out some cuh-RAP in high school. Thank God it wasn't printed in a book.
