Company logo
Zilpher7 (45 points) | Wed, 2007-07-11 10:37This is the changes that i have made, its not the final logo. The whole idea for my company is to assist other companies in coming up with new ideas and designs, the devolopement from old to new(evolution) whether it be corporate clothing ideas, advertizing, sports etc. Dare I ask for some input?

This concept is a HUGE improvement over the first. Applaude. You are moving your identity in a very positive direction.
The typography is much more appealing and the swirl has an animal print 'Zubaz' sort of feel to me. [It also resembles a fingerprint]
The multiple graphics in the top logo seem excessive and unnecessary in my opinion and you'd be better served with a more condensed verision like the bottom concept. The dots at the bottom aren't adding much to the overall identity and you should consider ditching them.
One idea would be to transform the swirl into a stylized 'Z' to add a touch of connection to the name. To build depth and draw attention to Zilpher you could also gray back 'design evolutions'. Also loosen the tracking a bit.
I just wish you wouldn't have destroyed the original critique which contained important links and feedback for other designers to see.
Keep up the great work!
Ok, granted it has evolved...
But now instead of a private investigator it looks like an IT company.
Something obscure to do with servers.
I agree it's better, but how does this tell me anything about you as a designer? (other than that you'd be great for designing logos for obscure IT companies)

Zilpher you Rock!! Not that the last one was a total washout but this new image shows you leaping buildings in one stride. Keep up the Good work and you will be in New York before sunset.
Dont let these old croanies put you off, your passion to learn is admirable and your definately on the right track!!
The comments from "these old croanies" are what encouraged this young designer to come up with this vast improvement on the original idea.
And by the way, it's spelled "cronies," and the word implies that we all know each other and are joined to a common cause in some nepotistic way. (Look it up.) Not so! I doubt that any of us has ever even met. When you get similar feedback from such a disparate (no, not "desperate") group of professional designers, the chances are fairly good that their advice is based on sound design principles and might be worth listening to -- as was obviously the case here. Okay, I'm hopping down off my soapbox now. (Hmm. Soapbox. You might have to look *that* one up, too, come to think of it!)
The fingerprint thing works. Creative_NRG, I love the "make it a Z" idea. That mark could stand alone as the company logo, with the text added only when absolutely necessary. Very cool approach. And I agree that the "Instant Logo" dots etc. add nothing. I like just the thumbprint thing and the text.
Mara
cronies? LOL. as Mara said, it's highly unlikely any of us have met. not to mention, we can't even send one another messages on here.
also, nice to see your account is all of 2-1/2hrs old. did you register just to call people cronies and give over the top comments? yeah, he made a ridiculously big leap in change in the right direction, but don't go over exaggerate that he'll be in "new york before sunset".

Thank you guys for your comment.
I have been forced into something that I am not ready for and I know I have to make this work, that is why I am on this site, I am not from NY, I am trying and I will give this my all, but how are people suppose to better themselfs when people have knowledge and they keep it for them self, no wonder people resort to drugs and alchol it is because of people saying to other people that theyare not good enough.Mr Plug
Thanks Guys.
Riaan
I like that name!
Look, I'm not going to sugar the pill for you sweetheart, I'm going to be honest.
I don't like it.
I don't like it because it looks unprofessional and amateur.
I don't get any sense of you from the design and what you could do for me.
I wasn't saying you weren't good enough, I was saying the logo isn't good enough, however if you think it is then go for it.
Don't get me wrong, I'm not the all seeing eye, I look back at my first design attempts now and cringe, but people telling me things aren't up to scratch didn't turn me to drink and drugs it only made me more determined to prove them wrong.
I've battled through to get where I am now producing some utterly appalling work along the way, but people telling me that what I'd produced was horrible made me more resilient then finding out what was wrong and looking objectively at my flaws was how I learnt to be better.
I'm not criticising YOU.
I'm criticising your design.
Is that not the point of the Critique section?
You want pointers and me to tell you exactly what I think is wrong item by item? Here goes:
The typography is just plain dull.
It's a bad font. Bad. End of.
Don't be seduced by fonts that are different or 'out-there' for the sake of it, classic fonts may seem boring to you, but I very VERY rarely install any fonts on my system. The art of good typography, and for that matter good design is to simplify to the point where you can make it no less complicated and flashy than it needs to be.
One of my favourite quotes is "A design is only complete when you can take nothing more away"
The bizarre fingerprint device is just odd and contrary to what other people have said I think it's horrible.
It won't print well or display well at small sizes, it's not a logo it's something you've spent what, 20 minutes on? If I'm wrong and you took days to create it thinking about how it will scale across media, how it will work at different sizes, how it represents the business then fine, but I just don't believe you have done that.
All of the above concepts are far too static and all to squeezed.
Don't feel the need to fill every available space in whatever size rectangle you decide to build the brand within, white space is good, essential to the way your design will work. Also don't think white space has to be white. Think outside the box.
Strapline: Design Evolutions...
Frankly I hate it.
Sure you're evolving other peoples designs, but it's far too blunt and to the point, be more creative with your strap, give it some vision and meaning.
Even if you only use two words, try to paint a picture with your copy.
Add to this the fact that term is in use by hundreds of other companies
I just think it's unimaginative and bland. End of story.
You can do better, that's my problem with it.
P.S. Make sure you don't upload CMYK images to the web.
Use 'Save for web" option in photoshop to make them net friendly.

Never heard that design quote but I love it.
The full quote is:
"A designer knows he has achieved perfection not when there is nothing left to add, but when there is nothing left to take away."

"how are people suppose to better themselves when people have knowledge and they keep it for themselves"
first, we aren't paid to be teaching our profession. We're doing this for the betterment of the design community. if you look into some of the comments, we're actually teaching you ALOT of little tricks. for example, this logo won't print nicely, that's something you seriously have to think about when doing logo designs.
second, your line "i've been forced into something that i am not ready for" doesn't really give you much credit. to be honest, when i read that, i read : "this isn't what i want to do, so i'm not gonna give it my best since it doesn't have meaning or importance to me" it also makes me wonder if i'm wasting my time right now explaining things as best we can.
third, a critique isn't going to be sugar coated compliments. it's going to be honest. sometimes nice, sometimes cut throat, and often everything between the two.
lastly, if this isn't what you want to be doing, then hire someone that would love to take the time to produce a quality logo. hire someone that takes designing seriously and loves doing it and thinks it through from conceptual phase to final execution. hire someone that takes into account a printer, a photocopier, a fax, what it'll look like on a letter head, web site, business card, side of a truck/car, or any other wild situations a logo can be used in.
like mentioned by plugz, we aren't critiquing the person, just the design. turning to alcohol or drugs is your prerogative. if you take it that seriously then somethings wrong, cause just remember, you're the one that "got forced into it" and you claimed yourself your not ready for it....
just my two cents... maybe next time i'll go spend them on a slot machine

If so, why? There were constructive comments as well as an indication of how this new thread "evolved". So now Anywho can appear with his first post and label us "old croanies" and praise your new work. Anywho read the comments in the deleted thread? I'm not buying it.
Best of luck with this design and your business "to assist companies develop ideas and design".
If a crit is needed I'd suggest you go back and read the comments from the first thread, they still pertain to this new presentation.
I don't know what's going on with the deleted threads. Who deletes them and why? How?
One of my critiques from less than a month ago was deleted. I didn't delete it, I was going to go back to it to utilize some of the suggestions when I updated the logo. Then, it wasn't there. Oh well.
When in doubt, keep it simple. I don't think the dots and lines are necessary, it's giving the logo a real 80s sci-fi / tech-y look. "Design Evolutions" is grammatically awkward, I'd drop the "s" from "Evolutions" so it reads "Design Evolution" -- it's a more active phrase.
And if you're really set on that phrase, then do some word lists and mind maps for "design" and "evolution". Look up what's been visually done in the past for evolution and try something different. Or take an old idea and put a fresh spin on it.
What does "Zilpher" mean? Is that your name or a made up word?
Check out design annuals or graphic logo collections for ideas on simple typographic solutions.
I just want to say that I meant I was forced to start this company too soon, I am still learning, not ready to face the world with my work. I love doing this, its hard but I love it, I love learning and bettering my self. This thumb print(it prints perfectly, I know more about printing than what I know about designing. Anyway all the comments that I get from you guys are great I dont go cry about it, I have learned not to get emotional about my work. Zilpher is a name that I had for years and I love it, not changing that. ITs not what you say as a crit it is how you say it! Thank you all for taking time to give me comments, I dont want it to become a who said what and how. The point here is that I am learning and I will acheive the things that I set out to do. But I cant do it on my own.
Lots of smiles from Sunny South Africa.
I will update you all with the design, if you want to see it

What about the phrase Evolution by Design. I agree that design evolutions does not really sound right. Keep up the passion Zilpher and stay off the drugs and alcohol.
Where's the fun in that?!?!?!
You think Dali drew his spindly legged elephants while sober?
Please.
;o)
www.jamnittygritty.com
he did.
he may have experimented with drugs/alchaol on occasion, but rarely.
he's been quoted as saying “I don’t take drugs. I am drugs.”
sure it's great to get blotto sometimes, but I think mixing that with work is a bad idea. especially when it's commercial work.
Srslah.

Thanks I think that will work, will spend the next couple of days working on some things, this time I will use my hands to create, then I will go into more detail. Thanks all.
