Company Site Idea
Daytonian (23 points) | Thu, 2005-09-29 14:31Hi All
I have been lurking around CB for awhile now, and decided to join up today. I must say that this site is great blend of design and web development. I am a web designer/developer in Dayton OH.
Here is a quick layout I put together yesterday for the design firm I work for. Still working on the copy and such but visuals are kind of there. Let me know what you think of the direction, colors and grid. Trying to emphasize experience and sophistication. Another goal is to try and make the site a no brainer as far as usability. I plan on this being a css/xhtml compliant site. All comments are welcome. Thanx.

Welcome to CB.
The colour scheme is a good mix for a simple website. The black bar however is quite overpowering upon first glance. The marker image integrating the logo is your strongest element on the page and that should take precedence.
Perhaps introducing a mock transparency effect with the black bar where it appears to be overlaid on top of the existing page at about 40% opacity. This would also help make the colours to the left of the bar not so isolated.
The navigation is simple and clear which is exactly what any nav should be. It's a bugbear of mine but I always want to see a scaled version of the overall artwork rather than a preview slice of one part of the overall piece.
All in all, a nice design and only a few small tweaks needed.

First of all the positives to make you feel good.
Now for the crushing blows to bring you back down to earth ;)
Hope that was constructive enough and not too negative ;)

Thanks for the great input so far, what detailed crits... AWSOME! I adjusted a few things in regards to your posts. I toned down the black a bit, let some of the 'marker' image bleed into the black bar, worked on the type a bit, brought up the body a bit to make the menu less 'floaty'. Again thanx for the response, the advice is much appreciated thus far.
I will try to post the updated version in my original post up top.

You can also embed the enhanced version in the later replies down, so that we get an idea of how far it has improved.
