Another concept I am working on for my personal mark. It's my initials cpw still working on some type to go along with it. Just looking for some feedback. Thanks.

I think you're onto something. Check your symmetry. Not sure the p needs to be connected to the w either. Definitely keep playing with it.

+1 on p

Oooh, nice! I like.

I feel like I've see something very much like it somewhere, though, like for some hotel chain. Can't place it, though.

I don't see the symmetry issue Art sees. I think the p connected with the w makes the w look like stylized boat anchor.

Anyway, I like.

Possibly the Apple Command key?

I like the mark but I think you could make it more square looking, it feels more vertically stressed probably because of the 'p' character connecting. It has potential for a really nice flow to it. Have you tried it without the border? Not saying it would necessarily look better just wondering what it would look like. I wouldn't even mind if the ends of your 'w' met the 'c' and 'p' at the bottom just as the characters meet at the top.

Right - that's what I meant by symmetry - probably the wrong term. It should be a square for this to work properly. But also the angles on the ends of the letters can mirror each other better as well.

IOW - refine.

I can't smile with this shape... maybe I remember swastika but you know, people says I'm crazy, maybe too much Carl Jung follower xD

I see anchors, you see archetypes. We think too much ;-)

I say run with the theme - turn your W into a mighty anchor; a true symbol of strength and reliability. Make the C & P into a rope that's curling around them. It doesn't matter that you're not a nautical-based graphic designer, do it anyways.

Imma gonna give yaz a peice of advice...

*a little closer, this is just between you and me kiddo*

I love this site. No really, I do. But you gotta take the advice given here with a grain of salt. Maybe the whole damn shaker. Sometimes, you need to bury that advice under a whole freakin mountain of the stuff. Here's why...

No matter what level of designer who comments, you'll notice a common thread in the critique. They'll put there own fingerprints on your design. Sure, you'll be rewarded with encouraging critiques as they see you are 'doing something'. That it's 'changing' in some way. Don't fall into that trap.

Take a step back. Look at your latest posts on this mark. Then, look at this post. Hell, print them all out and tape them to your bedroom ceiling. When you wake up, which one does your eye go to?

You'll find it's this one.

Without my sense of direction, I don't know where I'd be.

can you help me understand exactly why this one works better? i can "feel" that it does, but dont really know why? i think it has more room to breathe and maybe and easier path for you eye to follow without all the breaks.

Yes. You're seeing it. Great!

Today, I understand design from a very disciplined standpoint. Before that, I *knew* a design was *good* and I *knew* another design was *bad* because I felt it. However, I was challenged on a rant about a particularly bad design (I believed was very, very bad) and was confronted with "Well, it's design! It's all subjective! Your argument is invalid."

And that really stuck in my craw. I couldn't let it go.

So I studied why I *knew* and why I felt the way I did. How did I *know*?

I discovered what (I believe) designers used to be taught when they went through design courses. Today, a design school is principally focused on teaching the tools you need to create production ready artwork. Adobe Illustrator, Photoshop, InDesign, Dreamweaver, Flash. Leaving little room for teaching HOW or WHY that or that design is good.

The answer is Golden Ratio, Fibanacci and Sacred Geometry.

I believe your design (this design) is superior because it follows the rules of The Golden Ratio and Sacred Geometry. Do you see how this design simply breathes on its own? It's powerful, but it's also light. The outer line creates a wonderful resonance with the inner shapes of the mark. Negative space is in perfect harmony with the positive. All of this is done with a very simple and clear representation of the initials you wanted to communicate.

Brilliant.

You could stop here. Really. Or you could create even more interest with some detail work as suggested by other designers. It's up to you. The point is, YOU HAVE THE BONES HERE and you can hang a lot on it, if you want. Or, we can simply admire the loveliness of those bones.

YouTube those things I was mentioning. It can get a bit 'new age' real quick, but I felt everybody has something useful to offer on the subject. Recommend experimenting and discovering why you *knew* this was the best design and seeing if those topics justify what you felt!

Without my sense of direction, I don't know where I'd be.

No problem at all! Maybe check out this link which shows examples of my own studies. Never mind the geek-factor. It's all design.

All well and good when it comes to design principles - but if people see a "boat anchor" - they see a boat anchor. Know what I'm saying? There are design problems that extend beyond geometry.

I'm just sayin'...

Ya i understand there are visual communication issues that go beyond the form, but i was just saying that his comments helped me understand why some forms seem to just look right and some seem off.

First of all: Kevin! Yes yes yes to everything you wrote. That needs to become one of our "classic" posts, like Stephanie's on logos and Ivan's client questionnaire. With that in mind, and knowing you're "between gigs" right now, I hope you realize how much you have to offer and that you won't be tempted to sell yourself short.

That said, Art D. also has a point about the "I see boat anchors" issue. But I don't really see that as detrimental. Without further tweaking to turn this into a great mark for a yacht club, the idea of an anchor is perfectly appropriate for a designer. What we do does indeed anchor a client's message and thus its marketing presence, does it not?

So while I sang the praises of the square version of this, in spite of its bothering me that it was reminiscent to me of something I still can't put my finger on, now I'm coming back to this.

Congratulations, Kevin. You changed Mara's mind about something! Here...have a cupcake. :)

xD

take your #1 of second try (that is not in this page) but use this rounded shape.

you will avoid anchor and frog eggs and will make a four leaves clover =)

yes I'm brazilian xD
