Concept Photographs
Waleed (535 points) | Wed, 2005-06-22 16:03Howdy CB friends,
I'm working on a new area on my site called "Sharing Concepts". In that area I plan to post high resolution concept images that can help designers work on a concept and probably use it in a pitch.. All photos are copyrighted of course, but can be used free of charge for concept work (not production)..
I'll try to use an all white concept and subjects will be without a brand tag.. Just plain vanilla white for everything, with colored lighting and angles.. I spoke to a couple of designers that I work with from different ad agencies, and they both liked the idea and said it would of help in their work.
If you like the idea, I'd appreciate your help in suggesting subjects (perfumes, jewelry, canned goods, bottled goods, electronics, medical, ... etc) and I'll do my best to include them..
Thanks,
Waleed

Help me understand here please, but when you say concept work, what exactly do you mean? Would we be able to use them on websites and stuff? Or would that be production work?
Say you have an idea for an ad and you would like to show your client the idea but you're missing some photography of objects. Instead of using low-res images from the net that would make your ad look bad, you can download high-res photos and make your presentation.
The following step would be to go production using expensive photos that you either buy from stock image sites, or commission a photographer to do it. So, you will not need to go into an expense until needed.
You might ask yourself, what's the catch? Well, I'm a commercial photographer and this will allow me to help designers in their work. If they like my contribution, they'll consider me as a photographer for their projects.. There is no obligation of course..
On the other hand, I'm in Saudi Arabia and I might only be commissioned by local designers and not international ones. That is still ok by me, I'm honored that I can reach designers worldwide.
Designers ONLY will be allowed to use the photos on their websites or portfolios. However, photography credit/copyright must be stated.

Thanks for explaining. Fully understood.
So how exactly do we let you know that we want a quick/nice shot of something? Email?
Oh and I'm a design student, am I still allowed?
Students of any grade and any major are allowed..
Please note, the photos will be white so they will not be that useful in something you would like to publish. Example: A white bottle of shampoo, without a brand, on a white background is the start point. I'll add some colored lights from different angles to add depth.
As for "quick/nice shot of something", you can add it to this thread or email me. :)

Wow, this is an awesome idea.
So, let me see if I get this straight. You'll post a picture of like a fence or something... and I can make it into an ad... then use it as a portfolio piece? Or am I missing the "concept"?
If you're a designer, yes you're correct..

This is an awesome idea and something I can definitely see myself using to build my portfolio.
Glad to know you see a value in it. :)

I think it's a great idea, but i'm afraid you're competing with big on-line agencies that are already providing hundreds of images. If you do a search for "cut-out" on Getty you would get tonns. We need to find an edge over Getty. Getty also provides the deep etching path with the images, so it's easy for designers to place these objects on different backgrounds. One thing you can certainly do is shoot objects that are unusual, so they won't be available on Getty. Objects that are region relevant maybe. Like, where would I find an image of a hukka/water pipe, otherwise known as shisha. Stuff like that would be great.
No competition with Getty, as you might end-up buying images from them for your final production. I just want to lend a hand to designers, hoping local designers would consider me when they're thinking of photographers.
Local artifacts and subjects are an excellent idea, I'll keep that in mind.. Thanks :)
