Cooking web site

This is a site I've been working on for a couple of months. Long story short, it's a german recipe site designed for americans to use. It needs to be inviting, unpretentious and easy to use (noting too serious). The target audience is new to, or has very little experience with cooking German food, or german language teachers looking for online resources for students. The current site can be seen here:

The site hasn't been publicly promoted yet, so any help now would be beneficial. Open to any feedback, comments, critique.

Thanks,
Phillip

Layout is pretty decent, try using a bolder typeface for the title and putting it above the subtitle. Maybe you could make the background navigation pill in green or purple and have the text in white to add a little contrast. Also you need more text less image.

PS: the thing on the actual site at the bottom is just scary

Thanks for the comments. I definitely see the where the navigation needs more contrast, and just more text in general.

The web ring thing is horrible. I didn't design or have much of a choice on whice page it goes.

Thanks again.

Not sure why but if you start from the top left and work your way across and down the design gets less pleasing the further your travel. I agree a bolder typeface wouldn't hurt and possibly rethinking your menu, not a very tactile feeling page either.

But love the top left corner design, very clean.

A small thing you might want to look at is which file formats you're saving in. Some of the food buttons are obviously saved as gif images. On the first page : german potata salad vs. schnitzel. Food doesn't display as nice and crisp when it's in GIF format because of the limited colour palette. I suggested saving all food images in JPG, and maybe adding an unsharp mask.

Other than that the site is nice and clean, and easy to navigate.

You may want to change the 3s dessserts to just 2Ss. dessert - on the navigation bar.

Your body (selecting individual recipes) navigation seems to match the colour of the Google ads. I suggest either upping your font size, or using a different pallette, to differentiate between your content and the google content.

Jpegs with some unsharp mask are probably a better way to go.

I can't believe I, or no one else noticed the 3 S's.

Thanks again.
