Creating table of content in Indesign HELP!!

Hi! I´ve tried desperately without success to create a table of content both in a book or a document file in Indesign.
I get the headsline (f.ex. Content) to show but not what is there? Anybody please help!!! I don´t want to spend more days of my life trying to figure this out!
The manual doesn´t help me understand a thing, I am sorry.
