Creative tips

One of the best tips I ever received in the biz was from a college prof who suggested keeping a pen and paper on the bedside table in case inspiration struck. He said that the mind is more relaxed and receptive and able to sort through design issues that have plagued you through the workday.

To this day, that tip still serves me well. I don’t know how many times I’ve flicked on the light in the middle of the night to jot down solutions before dawn arrived and wiped the slate clean. What is the best tip that you’ve ever received and would care to share with others?

"Art -- the one achievement of Man which has made the long trip up from all fours seem well advised." - James Thurber

My tip would be to make your Significant Other wear eyeshades to bed so your inspirational moments don't wind up as "just cause" for a trip to divorce court! ;-)

Yeah, the middle-of-the-night creativity thing is valid. Maybe that's why a lot of creatives are night owls. Anyway, scribbling notes is a great idea. You always think you're going to remember stuff, but you never do. One time, I had a dream in which one very simple thing would have solved all the world's problems, or at least, would have triggered the process. Unfortunately, that's all I remember about the dream -- not what the actual triggering thing was! Grrr...

Great point Mara!

Writing things down is definately what I have to do. Not having the best memory, I found comfort in the following quote (do not remember who said it) and it goes as follows:

"Successful people do not rely on their memory, they write things down"

Before jumping on the computer, draw it first. Before starting a job, get it in writing first. Best advice I've ever gotten.

The power of sketching and manually writing things down! As a student of Graphic Design, I hear a lot of other students complain about drawing manually first! They often wonder why we can not just hop on the computer and eliminate the manual! It is in fact the first step to manually draw! Otherwise the artform could become extinct!

Not only that, but individual expression is severely limited when you allow the computer to do all the work for you.

I organize weekends where I am NOT allowed to be anywhere NEAR a computer. Meaning, for a whole weekend, I meet with old friends I haven't seen in a while, I draw (yes! by hand!) I write, I go out and take picture of nature, the city or just about anything. The computer, I am now realizing that although it's a great tool, its a creativity killer. It's so easy to get side tracked if you're connected to the internet. An hour or two at the gym, a dip in the pool or reading a magazine in the sauna are other ways I get the creative juices flowing. Best tip I ever recived was take down the project specs, start the project the next day ( after a GOOD nights sleep)

Great advice. The computer is like an addiction and it can totally drain your brain because of the info overload.
